Futty Gets the Call Up

A big congratulations to Mamadou "Futty" Danso, who departed Monday for Banjul, The Gambia. The Gambian defender is headed to his birthplace, in what could be considered the greatest honor for a footballer, playing for your home nation.

Futty will miss Thursday's final regular season home match. This is his first time training with the senior national team, and hopefully he gets minutes this Saturday, in a qualifier for the 2012 Africa Cup of nations. He will return to Portland this Sunday.

Futty number 98, has become a defender the Timbers can count on. In regular season play this year he scored the game winning goal against Vancouver, and had a great free kick assist in Ryan Pore's goal against Baltimore on Sunday. He will be missed this Thursday, but as the season hits the final leg, Futty will be a crucial part.

Showing Baltimore Who's Boss, Timbers win 3-0

Portland celebrates at "home plate" during their blowout win over Baltimore

The Portland Timbers made a statement and got a taste of redemption Sunday evening. In front of 15,418 at PGE Park, the Timbers (10-7-8, 38pts) put a beating on Baltimore from start to finish - a bottom-dwelling USSF team that had gotten the best of them twice already this season. With the victory, the 4th place Timbers further solidified their spot in the standings and sent a message about the quality of soccer this team is capable of playing on a given night.

"From front to back," Said Coach Gavin Wilkinson, "We were at a different level. Some of the best football I've seen here in the last 2 years. The ball speed, the movement off the ball, the runs made out of the middle of the pack, the runs made up front - it was exciting."

The Timbers started dominating the match soon after the opening kickoff, keeping possession of the ball for long periods and creating dangerous chances inside the offensive third with smart passing. After a handful of brilliant strikes and near goals, Portland would break open the scoring in the 15th minute when a long, lobbing free kick by defender Mamadou Danso found a streaking Ryan Pore up the sideline. Pore would cut his way through the middle of the field, blasting a quick strike past Baltimore keeper Evan Bush for his league-leading 14th goal of the season. The Timber's early pressure was efficient and relentless, playing some of their best 20 minutes of soccer on the year.

"Our team chemistry has never looked (better)." Said forward Bright Dike. "We played so well together (tonight), everybody was reading off one another."

"We had a point to prove," Said defender Scot Thompson. "We set the tone in the first ten minutes and had some great strikes."

Portland would score again before the end of the 1st half, in the 42nd minute midfielder Johan Claesson placed a nice lead ball for Dike, who made his way through a crowd of defenders before unleashing a left-footed shot towards the far post and into the back of the net.

" I don't think they expected me to shoot with my left," Said Dike. "And I will, so I think that caught (the defense) off guard and the keeper off-guard."

Dike would continue his scoring in the 2nd half, putting another shot past keeper Evan Bush from the top of the box off an assist from Pore in the 53rd minute. With the assist, Pore further added to his overall season total of 34pts, which currently is tops in the league. The goal is Dike's 7th on the year and his 6th goal in the last 7 games. The rookie striker also lead the team with 7 shots against Baltimore Sunday evening.

"Dike could have had another (goal) tonight." Said Coach Wilkinson. "The two strikes he had (for near goals) were brilliant."

Added Wilkinson "There's no mystery that our result has started improving as (Dike's) hit a little bit of form and hit the back of the net too."

The Timbers were able to outwork their opponents, winning balls, controlling possession and ultimately outshooting Baltimore 18-8. Portland's defense also looked in top form, keeping Baltimore at bay for most of the match, rarely allowing them any chances inside the last 18-yards. Keeper Steve Cronin was only forced to make one save on the night and recorded his 8th shutout of the year. The brick-wall defense was the foundation for building the Timber's attacks.

"Gavin's been saying all year that we gotta average 10 shots per half and we (basically) did that tonight." Said Thompson. "So looking at the next home game, we want to end on a good note at home, and hopefully take that momentum into the playoffs."

With only 5 games left in the regular season, the Timbers not only redeemed themselves against Baltimore, but certainly continued to build positive momentum heading towards the postseason. Too often this year, Portland has outplayed their opponent, but failed to find the right end result. Tonight, the team dominated out on the field and for once, the score accurately reflected their effort.

"We out played them tonight." Said Wilkinson. "I think we showed exactly the difference between the two teams."

Still, as well as the Timbers played, it's important to temper the excitement with some perspective. Baltimore is coming off two other blowout losses, has the 3rd worst record in the league, and has a defense that's now allowed 36 goals on the season.

A sobering reminder by Coach Wilkinson after the match: "You gotta remember where they are on the table."

Boom! An Offensive Explosion
Portland was able to match their highest goal scoring effort of the season with their 3 goals tonight, the most the team has scored in a league game since April 22nd against AC St. Louis. How was the team able to blow up offensively? Surely, much of it has to do with the continued production of Ryan Pore, but Dike's recent scoring tear has seemingly been the major difference this past month. Portland finished August with a record of 3-1-2.

"Bright is so much of a handful that other players are finding a little bit more room." Said Coach Wilkinson.

The Timbers took full advantage of playing a non-playoff team Sunday evening, trying out a new formation as well as mixing up the starting rotation. Team captain Ian Joy sat the game to nurse an injury and other recent starters such as Ross Smith, James Marcelin, and Alex Nimo took the night off as well.

"It's an opportunity to get some players a little bit of rest." Said Wilkinson.

Portland also used a 4-3-3 formation against Baltimore, placing Ryan Pore up-front with Dike and forward Doug DeMartin. The midfield saw Keith Savage and Johan Claesson on the wings with Tony McManus hanging around the backline for defensive purposes.

"I felt that putting three in the middle of the pack we could exploit them and we did." Said Wilkinson, "Tactically, we adjusted a few things. We brought Johan and Keith in, they both have a great ability to keep the ball and are always looking forward and also (playing 3 forwards upfront) allowed Pore a little more freedom."

The 4-3-3 formation helped the Timbers to clog up and control the middle, as well as allowing more space up the sideline of the field. Openings and chances were created for players who are not normally involved in the attack. For instance, defender Steve Purdy fell into multiple scoring runs, including a open goal shot in front of the net that was kicked wide. It also helped that, Portland took care of the ball, their turnovers kept down, and their passes staying sharp for a majority of the night. What do think about the Timber's formation changes? Is it too late in the season to make such shifts? Or should we see something similar again from the team?

Scot with one T
Defender and fan favorite Scot Thompson saw his first action since June 27th when he subbed into the 2nd half for Steve Purdy. Thompson, in his 7th season as a Portland Timber, has fallen out of the rotation in the last few months as Coach Wilkinson has opted to go with younger upcoming talent, such as Purdy or Quavas Kirk. Thompson has only made 10 appearance this year for the team.

"It was great," Said Thompson about getting back onto the field "It's been awhile since I've gotten in to play, we've got some great defenders out there, so all I can do is just work hard in training or at whatever chance I get"

However, Sunday night could possibly have been the last time Timber fan's will get to see Scot Thompson play at PGE Park. With only one home game remaining (Portland hosts 6th place Puerto Rico Thursday) and then the playoffs, there might be a chance that Thompson wont make another appearance at home.

"It was an opportunity to honor Scot and for Scot to be rewarded for everything he's done for this organization." Said Wilkinson. "I thought it was deserved, deserved of him, his work ethic, his commitment to this organization, for the fans to see him and give him the recognition."

So, will this be the last time the Timber's Army gets to see Scot Thompson suit up in green? Maybe, maybe not. There's always the unpredictable nature of injuries or perhaps certain situations that could arise where Thompson's reliable services would be called upon again. Regardless, the near sellout crowd erupted upon Thompson's entrance into the game; cheering as loud as they had all night for a player that's as important as anyone in helping to build this franchise to what it is today and what it will be in the near future.

Said Thompson about the possibility of playing his last match in front of the fans at PGE Park, "I hope not, but it's always in the back of my mind. If I'm not out here again, then so be it, but it was surely great to be a part it."

A Chance for Redemption, Baltimore Returns to PGE

Portland Timbers
(9-7-8, 35pts)

Crystal Palace Baltimore
(6-12-6, 24pts)

A team at the bottom of the league standings is coming to PGE Park to play the Timbers. For most, playing a non-playoff team would be a welcome advantage, but this isn't exactly the case for this year's Timbers squad.

Against the bottom three teams in the league Portland (9-7-8, 35pts) has an unmoving record of 3-3-1, including a record of 1-1-1 at home versus those same cellar dwelling clubs. Oddly enough the Timbers are 3-1-3 against the top 3 teams in the league - the bad habit of playing down to their competition level something that has seemingly developed over the course of the season.

Crystal Palace Baltimore (6-12-6, 24pts) in only their first year competing as a 2nd-tier level franchise, currently has the 3rd-worst record in the league, and will likely miss the playoffs. However, the Timbers are 0-2-0 against Baltimore this season with their first home-loss of the year coming to Crystal Palace back in May, followed by a 2-1 loss at Baltimore later that month. The path has been a bit bumpy this year whether home or away for Portland, sporting a record of 5-3-5 at home and 4-4-3 on the road thus far.

Lately, the season has started to take a more positive turn. The 4th place Timbers are currently riding a 4 game unbeaten streak and are 2-1-2 so far in the month of August. Portland's moment of redemption against Baltimore will likely hinge on their ability to score goals, something the team has struggled with all year. Fortunately, Baltimore's defense hasn't provided much resistance, conceding 33 goals this year (only Miami has been scored on more this season). Crystal Palace is coming off back-to-back blowout losses, falling to Rochester 2-0 before losing to Monreal 5-0 last week at home.

With 6 games remaining in the year, a strong finish would be useful in the Timber's attempt to build confidence and momentum heading into the playoffs. Portland will have to incorporate new players into the system quickly however, as the starting combination of recent signing Ibad Muhamadu and forward Bright Dike will only see its 4th pairing, and midfielder Kalif Alhassa will likely see his first action sometime this week. Without a doubt, its been a somewhat disappointing 2010 season and many questions have arisen. What's been going on exactly? Has the team been effected by the raised expectations and pressure from the fans and media? Or has luck simply not been on the Timber's side? Erase a few costly mistakes and turn a few of those draws into wins and would everyone view this season under a different light?

How Portland finishes these last 6 games will go a long way towards answering those questions. And an emphatic victory against a team that the Timbers are supposed to beat should be pretty helpful as well.

14,985 Witness a Wild One At PGE Park

The Portland Timbers (9-7-8, 35pts) played the Austin Aztex (13-3-6, 45pts) to a 1-1 draw in an emotionally charged match that would see a flurry of fouls, eight yellow cards, and multiple ejections, including one for the opposing team's manager. Despite a chaotic ending that would see a bit of controversy and a red card booking for midfielder Rodrigo Lopez, Portland would play a majority of the 2nd half with a man advantage yet was unable to find the game-winning goal. With the draw, the Timbers will remain in 4th place in the overall standings, and have 6 games left in the season with a tough Carolina Railhawks team only one point behind them.

An interesting and exciting match, the Timbers would open the scoring just 4-minutes into the 1st half, a misplaced ball by an Aztex defender would lead to a break away up the sideline for forward Bright Dike. Dike would use his strength to get inside the Austin box, bouncing defender Kieron Bernard off his shoulder and striking a low shot by keeper Miguel Gallardo for the early lead. Dike's 4th goal in 6 matches. However, it wouldn't take long for the Aztex to find their equalizer, as midfielder Sullivan Silva would score his 1st goal of the season in the 26th minute on a beautiful volleyed blast that would skip through a crowd of Portland defenders, perfectly placed into the corner of the net. Truly, a top class play.

For the most part, the 1st half was a ragged and rough affair. The teams would combine for a total of 18 fouls in the first 45 minutes, with Austin committing 10, including a yellow card for Kieron Bernard. With all the physical play, neither side was able to find a real rhythm to their attack or sustain possession for extended periods. As a result, offensive creativity was often reduced to searching long balls over the top and other quick hitting plays. Still, Portland would apply pressure to close out the half, finding close chances for both Alex Nimo and Keith Savage. Overall, the Timbers would outwork Austin (the league's best offensive team), outshooting them 9-4 heading into the locker room.

2nd Half Breakdown
Here's where things get crazy. Portland would open the 2nd half the same way they closed the first forty-five, moving the ball around well, probing deep into the opposing eighteen, and creating dangerous scoring opportunities. The game-changing moment would come in the 56th minute. Austin defender Kieron Bernard, perhaps frustrated by Portland's constant pressure, would be booked for his second yellow card after recklessly clipping midfielder Ryan Pore as he pushed forward on a run into the offensive third.

From here, the strategy of the match would shift dramatically. The Timbers would play the next 34 minutes with a one-man advantage, however, they would fail to fully control the match as Austin went into survival mode, fouling and stalling play wherever and whenever available in an effort to preserve the draw.

"We didn't take advantage of the red card," Said Dike, "They slowed it down and we could never pick up the pace of the game."

"They're smart footballers," Said Joy. "They get the ball, they try to waste time, they play for fouls...and getting yellow cards. "

Was Austin's strategy good soccer? Certainly not making their best effort to play the "beautiful game", the Aztex main goal was in fact the opposite, instead trying to ugly things up on the field as much as possible. What do you think? Cheap or clever? Cowardly or commendable?

(56th min) Austin goes a man down.

(57th min) An intentional foul in the backfield to make a player change. Austin subs out striker Maxwell Griffin to bring in rarely used defender Sam Brill, shifting to a one-forward formation and often packed 5 or sometimes even 6 players into the box to defend the backline.

(58th min) For the next 5 minutes or so, Austin was content to play keep away, not really probing and on multiple occasions passing the ball backwards. The Timbers didn't help matters, struggling to settle into an attack and carelessly turning the ball over on repeated possessions.

(62nd min) Steve Cronin misjudges a run to the top of the box, the loose ball bouncing wide to forward Eddie Johnson. With Cronin out of goal, Johnson would send a rolling shot on target, but defender Mamadou Danso would fortuitously be in position for the block.

(63rd min) Timbers would counter-attack quickly, midfielder Alex Nimo slipping his way towards the top of the box and sending a left-footed shot just wide of the post. Portland seems to wake up, beginning to control possession and control the tone a bit more.

(67th min) An Austin foul at midfield. Suddenly, Aztex manager Adrian Heath is given a red card and ejected from the match after an exchange of words with an official on the sideline. Heath would then walk off the field and head towards the North End, first passing by Gavin Wilkinson and shaking his hand, then walking up into the stands, finding a seat in the rafters, leaning back with a dejected-look smeared across his face and proceed to watch the match amongst the fans. Strange. Simply bizarre and I'll admit, also kinda awesome. Eventually, Heath was escorted back to the locker room.

(71st min) Pore would find some space entering into the middle of the offensive third. Austin commits a foul, tripping Pore up before he can create anything.

(73rd min) Keeper Miguel Gallardo collides with teammate Kevin Sakuda leaping to stop an incoming cross. Sakuda and Gallardo both lay on the field addressing their wounds, momentarily stopping play. Gallardo gets up and kicks the ball out of bounds to stop play and bring in a substitution.

(75th min) A 50/50 ball high in the air, defender Ross Smith and Austin's Eddie Johnson both leap to put a head on it and collide. Johnson takes an elbow to the face and falls to the ground. Another stoppage of play. Smith is given a yellow card. Multiple Timbers surround the referee to protest the call. For the fans and the players, the intensity of the match seems to raise to even another level here.

(84th min) After a Timber's foul, Gallardo milks time off the clock, claiming that Portland players weren't allowing the mandatory 10 yards of space for a free kick. Gallardo is given a yellow card for stalling, essentially stalling the game more.

(85th min) Joy touches his hand to the back of Watson, who instantly drops to the ground for the foul. Watson takes a moment to adjust his socks, then untie and retie his shoe before taking the free kick.

(87th min) Pore bursts through a pack of players on a nice run across the midfield, but is stopped by an Austin defender Yohance Marshall, who literally hurls his body into Pore's legs, taking both men out and sending Pore tumbling to the ground. No foul is called.

(87th min) Marshall remains on the ground, selling the collision that he himself initiated. Play is stopped momentarily.

(88th min) Callahan makes a dangerous sliding tackle on Lopez, cleats to ankle, dropping him to the ground. Calahan is given a caution.

(Stoppage Time) Austin makes a final substitution. Seemingly pointless at this point in the match, unless an attempt to waste more time and stop play yet again.

(Stoppage Time) After minimal contact, an Austin player dives onto the ground, his body falling over the ball. He smothers the ball momentarily with his stomach until he is whistled for a hand ball violation.

(Stoppage Time) Gallardo takes a Danso header off his chest in an attempt to kill time. Joy rushes into the box to try and make a play, grazing Gallardo with his arm. Gallardo falls to the ground writhing in pain for over a minute. Joy turns to Gallardo, his arms up in disbelief, and he is quickly swarmed by multiple Austin players. Chaos ensues. Players are shoving, grabbing, and shouting at each other. After the dust settles, Rodrigo Lopez is given a red card and ejected from contest for his part in the may-lay, perhaps for aggravating the situation (there's speculation that a punch may have been thrown as well). Either way he's sitting out next game.

It should also be noted that there were multiple instances where Austin would frivolously boot the ball down the field, effectively breaking up the rhythm of the game. The Aztex often dove or crumbled to the turf after minimal physical contact, causing hesitation and awkward moments throughout the 2nd half. Grabbing, pulling, and other acts of gamesmanship were common tactics by the Aztex, essentially putting the referee in tough situations, placing pressure on the official to make calls when there had already been so many fouls blown in the game.

"Every time the referee stopped the game it slowed us down," Said Joy with frustration. "And then we had to start from scratch again."

"They took the pace out of the game," Added Dike. "We couldn't get into a rhythm cause they slowed down everything that they could. "

The Timbers could never successfully maintain possession and failed to control the tempo and tone of the match. Certainly, Austin's survival and stall methods had an impact, but Portland didn't help their cause by carelessly giving the ball away and committing far too many turnovers to find a flow. Too often the Timbers played frantically and seemed to over-press at times. More patience may have helped.

Said Coach Wilkinson, "It's a win that escaped us."

Still, Portland outshot Austin 4-2 in the 2nd half and fired a myriad of shots in the closing moments. Austin meanwhile, rarely threatened in the final 18yards, as Cronin didn't record a single save on the night. A break here or a break there and the outcome of the game could have been different. Again, fortune not quite siding with the Timbers.

Ultimately, in a statement match for two of the league's top teams, both sides would play with passion and desperation, but after another 90 minutes the score would finish tied yet again. Nothing has really been decided after two tough battles, the story not quite finished between these two teams this season. Sounds like the stuff rivalries are made of. It'll be fun stuff if these clubs can somehow collide in the playoffs.

Game Preview: The Last Home Stretch

Portland Timbers

Austin Aztex
(13-3-5, 44pts)

The sun's been shining on Portland lately. The Timbers (9-7-7, 34pts) are riding a 2-game road win streak, further strengthening their 4th place position in the overall league standings, and are now facing a 3 game home stand, starting with the Austin Aztex on Thursday. Things are starting to get rosy in the Rose City and with 7 games remaining in the regular season the timing couldn't be better. Portland is unbeaten in their last 3 matches and their defense has recorded back-to-back shutouts for only the 2nd time this year. Could the Timbers possibly string together their first 3 game win streak of the season?

The Aztex (13-3-5, 44pts) will be a nice gauge of just how hot things are getting in Portland. Austin has had quite a successful sophomore year as a franchise. Currently 3rd place in the overall standings, the Aztex have been one of the better teams in the league this season and had sat atop of the points table for most of the year before being overtaken by Rochester earlier this month. Regardless, Austin and Rochester were the first two teams to clinch playoff berths after wins this past weekend and the Aztex have a record of 2-0-1 in August.

The iron may be heating up, but there are still plenty of kinks to be ironed out before the playoffs begin. Coach Gavin Wilkinson hasn't hesitated to tinker with the rotation in recent weeks, an effort to zero-in on the line-up that gives the team the best chance to win in the postseason. For instance, Portland has had 5 different starting line-ups in their last 5 matches. Not only has the rotation seen many different combinations of players, but players such as Taka Suzuki moved from position to position, seeing action upfront and in the midfield. Along with the irregular rotation, Coach Wilkinson has even experimented with formation changes in short periods, at times using a 5-4-1 formation or switching to a 4-5-1. Incorporating new signees Ibad Muhamadu and Kalif Alhassan could potentially present chemistry challenges, especially with playoffs fast approaching. All of this amounts to an atmosphere of instability. The Timbers are starting to move forward, but just how sturdy are those stilts they're standing on?

That's one way to look at it. On the other hand, the Timber's changing rotation shows the quality of depth this team possesses on its roster, and the formation shifts are just an example of the team's diversity out on the field. The signing of new blood is a boost to the club just when they need it and the team's play is starting to come together at the right time as well. A rosier perspective, perhaps. Where do you feel the state of the team is right now? Do you feel things are "coming together" or moving in the right direction at least?

Either way, it's hard to argue that the Timbers will need offensive production on Thursday night, another aspect that's been lacking in consistency this year. Earlier in the season, Portland and Austin played to a 0-0 draw in Texas, so if the backline can play tight and error free soccer again, then the pressure will fall on offense to find the back of the net. Portland has scored 23 goals this year and given up 19, while Austin has 40 goals for and 24 against. Ryan Pore leads the USSF D2 League in scoring with 13 goals on the season, however, five of those scores have come from penalty kicks. Forward Bright Dike has scored 4 goals this year and has been on a tear as of late, scoring 3 times in his last 5 games. So where will the Timbers find offense? Who's gonna step up?

Players to Watch or Who's scoring all these goals for Austin?
Maxwell Griffin #11 - A prolific scorer in college, the UCLA grad has tallied 7 goals this season, including a hat trick in Miami. One of only 18 players to ever record a hat trick for the Bruins as well.

Eddie Johnson #8 - A product of Manchester United's youth development system and in his second year with the team, the English striker has 15 goals in 45 appearances. Johnson last played for Chester City before signing with Austin.

Jamie Watson #77 - The young Texas native has been all over the US soccer pyramid, playing in the PDL, USL2, D-2, to the MLS and back again. The forward is finding success this year in Austin where he's tallied 19 total points and scored 6 goals.

Ian Joy: Wants to play in MLS 4 or 5 years

Ian Joy on MLS:
I share those same passions and fit in very well here at the club. It's no secret that I want to play in MLS again next season and I have every intention of doing that with Portland Timbers. I have proved my fitness this season and, at only 29, I want to continue my playing career at the highest level in America for the next four or five years.

Ian Joy on Timbers fans:
They are right up there, not just with the best in this country, but the best in the world. It is safe to say that the similarities between St. Pauli fans and Timbers fans are there because of their political beliefs and the noise that they generate during games. They use football not just to enjoy a game, but to also promote or demonstrate how they feel and that is something very special to me.
There's a reason why this guy is becoming a fan favorite, and why he was made captain.  He shows a lot of passion and emotion for his team on and off the field.

A Few of the Old Legends in the Jimmy Conway Testimonial Match

Gavin Wilkinson - The 36 year old will be out there showing everyone that he's still got a bit of the old glory in him. Hopefully, some his players will get a chance to see their coach in action. After all, we ARE talking about a former Perth Glory Most Glorious Player Award winner.

John Bain - Played for the NASL Timbers from 1978-82 and lead the Timbers in scoring with 45 goals in 148 matches. He returned to Portland as player/coach for the 89' & 90' seasons. He also was player/coach for the Portland Pride indoor soccer team. He now coaches the Westside Metros. A Portland soccer legend.

Darren Sawatzky - Spent a lot of time with a club from up north. And he's really good.

Dale Mitchell - The former head coach of the Canadian national team played for the Timbers from 78'-82', scoring 35 goals in 101 NASL appearances. A prolific scorer throughout his career, Mitchell played in 55 games for the Canadian national team and had 19 international goals, the most ever by a Canadian player. He is truly a Canadian soccer legend, perhaps the greatest player to ever come out of the country and was part of the only team in Canadian history to qualify for the World Cup finals in 86'. Although, Mitchell's coaching career wasn't quite as legendary as his playing career, the 52-year old knows how to find the back of the net, even money he scores a goal tomorrow night.

Brian Winters - A graduate of University of Portland, the former Pilot scored 4 goals and recorded 10 assists for his career out of the midfield. A 2000 MLS SuperDraft pick of the Columbus Crew, Winters eventually found his way back to Portland, playing for the Timbers from 2001-2005. He's the USL 1st division all-time leader in minutes, games played, and fouls committed. Will he be the first to be booked for a yellow card?

Paul Conway - Son of Jimmy. The Jesuit HS graduate played in England from 1993-98. A former USL all-star and MVP, Conway played 165 games for the Charleston Battery, scoring 78 career goals. He spent his final professional season with the Timbers in 2005 playing in 13 games. Conway currently resides in Oregon and announces USL soccer matches for Fox Sports.

Hugo Alcaraz-Cuellar - Anyone else miss the days of Byron and Hugo? Hugo played for the Timbers from 2002-2006, making 132 appearances and scoring 10 goals. A talented playmaker out of the midfield, Hugo is the all-time Timber leader in assists with 44. He was also ranked 15th in the USL First Division Top 25 of the Decade, a list of the league's most influential and best players. Hugo last played for the Sounders in 2008, but is currently not with a team.

Greg Howes - A Timber from 2001-02, Howes scored 12 goals in his Portland career. Howes is currently a player/coach for the USL developmental league's Tacoma Tide and has scored 6 goals so far this season. But the best part? Howes is an Oregon State graduate.

Andrew Gregor - Another player that's been on both sides of the Northwest rivalry. Gregor played for the Timbers in 2004 and in the 2007-08 seasons, scoring 10 goals throughout his career with the team. Gregor also has deep local roots, winning the Oregon 4-A player of the year award in 1993 playing for Sunset High School and was also a graduate of the University of Portland.

Better Know a Timber - Kevin Goldthwaite

Kevin "Goldie" Goldthwaite is a 27 year old defender from the NY Red Bulls. Along with Dike he was standout player for the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame. He was selected 17th overall in the 2005 MLS Super Draft by the San Jose Earthquakes. He was loaned to the Timbers during the 2005 campaign, in which he made 10 appearances and logged 892 minutes. He bounced around the MLS ending up in New York, making 52 appearances from 2007 to 2010. In 2008 he helped NY to the playoffs and earned the defender of year award from the club. He was waived by the Red Bulls earlier this month to make room for Rafael Márquez.

He is expected to be fit to play in two weeks according to the press release.
  • 2005 - San Jose Earthquakes and loaned to the Timbers
  • 2006, 2007 - Houston Dynamo, John Spencer Connection
  • 2007 - Toronto FC - Scored in Toronto FC's first MLS win
  • 2007-2010 NY Red Bulls - Red Bulls Defender of the Year 2008

Timbers to announce signing Kevin Goldthwaite within the hour

The Timbers will be announcing the signing of defender Kevin Goldthwaite within the hour. The 27 year old defender was waived by the New York Red bulls in June.  Goldthwaite has been on an MLS roster for six seasons, and has played in 92 MLS matches with the Red Bulls, Dynamo and Earthquakes.

Update: It's official.  Here is the press release.

This is Goldthwaite's second time as a member of the Timbers:

While on loan with the Timbers in 2005, Goldthwaite logged 892 minutes in 10 matches, helping the Timbers to a USL First Division playoff appearance.

Interestingly enough, he also appeared in a US Open Cup match against the Timbers in 2005 as a member of the Earthquakes.  The Timbers were 4-4-2 (W-T-L) with Goldthwaite on the team and 10-9-9 overall that season.

Timbers to Host Special Testimonial Match Before Thursday's Game

From the Timbers:

TIMBERS TO HONOR JIMMY CONWAY WITH TESTIMONIAL
Club to host testimonial match Aug. 26, featuring Timbers alumni

For immediate release: Aug. 16, 2010
PORTLAND, Ore. – Partnering with the local soccer community, the Portland Timbers will honor former player and assistant coach Jimmy Conway with a testimonial and when they play host to a testimonial match Thursday, Aug. 26, at PGE Park. A team of former Timbers players will face a select team at 5 p.m., prior to the Timbers match against the Austin Aztex at 7 p.m.

Among the several events honoring Conway, who has been diagnosed with trauma-induced dementia, the testimonial match will pit a team of Timbers alumni against the Oregon Select XI, which is comprised of players Conway coached at the youth and collegiate levels. Conway is expected to play for both sides during the match.

Tickets for the day are $12 in advance and will allow entry into both the testimonial match and Timbers game against Austin; gates open at 4:30 p.m. Tickets are available through the PGE Park box office, area Ticketmaster locations, online at www.ticketmaster.com or by phone at (800) 745-3000.

“Jimmy is a great person and a true gentlemen,” said Gavin Wilkinson, Timbers head coach and general manager. “He has done more for the development of the sport in the state of Oregon than people will ever truly realize.”

Conway, 64, will also be recognized by the Timbers during a special presentation at halftime of the match against the Aztex. In addition to his time with the Timbers, Conway also had a significant impact on the development of soccer at the youth and collegiate levels in Oregon for nearly 30 years.

The concept of a “testimonial” match has a long history in Europe and can be traced back to the days when clubs honored long-serving players prior to retirement. Conway’s family, friends and colleagues planned the testimonial activities after learning he had been diagnosed with trauma-induced dementia last fall.

Among the players scheduled to play for the Timbers alumni are Wilkinson (2001-06), John Bain (1978-82), Darren Sawatzky (2001), Paul Conway (2005), Hugo Alcaraz-Cuellar (2002-06), Greg Howes (2001-02), Andrew Gregor (2004; 2007-08), Lee Morrison (2003-07), Brian Winters (2001-05) and Dale Mitchell (1978-82). Members of the Oregon Select XI side include former Timbers goalkeeper coach Jim Brazeau (2001-05; 2007-09) and player Eric Cronkrite (2004).

After starting his career in Ireland and with top-flight English clubs Fulham and Manchester City, Conway was transferred to the Timbers’ North American Soccer League franchise in 1978. He was one of the great playmakers of the Timbers’ NASL era, totaling seven goals and 15 assists in 61 matches during his three seasons as a player with the club. Conway, who earned 20 caps with the Ireland National Team during his playing career, served as an assistant coach for the Timbers from 1980-81 and then again for the current franchise from 2001-05.

Conway’s coaching resume also includes time in the college ranks with Pacific University and Oregon State University as well as three decades at the youth levels, coaching elite teams at the state and regional levels. He recently retired after 28 years as the director of coaching for Oregon Youth Soccer Association.

Additional information on the Jimmy Conway testimonial and its events can be found on the official website at www.jimmyconway.com.

Here at Dropping Timber we feel that competition related head-trauma is a serious and important issue facing soccer today. We feel that everything should be done to raise awareness about the potential hazards and risks that are out there on the field. Player safety is an issue that's currently under the microscope for other major sports in America, such as helmet collisions in the NFL or the role of fighting in the NHL for instance. So it's certainly a topic that the MLS needs to consider heavily as well. Clearly, it's unrealistic to take all physical danger out of sports, it's simply a part of serious athletic competition. And it's not anyone's goal to stop sports altogether and it would be frivolous to try (Jay DeMerit hid a mutilated tongue from his coaches so he could stay in a World Cup game). Athletes love the sports they play and most would play for free, but it's simply about raising awareness and prevention. As long as people know what they're getting into and the dangers are minimized, then what else can be done?

Here's a piece Dropping Timber did earlier this season regarding player safety:

An Important Heads Up Before the Season

With all the recent attention that has been paid to head injuries in the NFL recently, it's inevitable that the spotlight will eventually be shone down upon soccer and other injury-prone sports. And for good reason. Although the benefits of athletic competition are easily apparent (teamwork, dedication, hard work, etc), all too often the physical and sometimes life-threatening risks can be overlooked, denied, or simply ignored. Many barriers towards stronger safety measures exist in soccer, most commonly the assumption that soccer isn't a dangerous sport or that heading the ball is simply fundamental to the game. Former players who naively hold to the belief that if they themselves played the game for years free from head trauma then it can't possibly be a serious issue. For instance, observe the blase' attitude this site takes with head injuries.

However, this couldn't be further from truth. Recent studies have shown that the percentage of injuries in soccer that are head related account for about 2-4% of all injuries. And although a seemingly small number, this percentage is very comparable to American football. The main concern here is TBI or Traumatic Brain Injury, which is defined as an external force causing traumatic injury to the brain. TBI can also be categorized as mild, medium, or severe and can cause a host of physical, cognitive, emotional, and behavioral effects with outcomes ranging from complete recovery to permanent disability or death. Common physical symptoms may include headaches, loss of consciousness, nausea, dizziness, and blurred vision among others.

So what is the cause of head injuries in soccer? Heading the ball obviously, right? Well, not so fast. According to one recent report, a majority of head injuries are caused by....continue reading

Timbers Beat Minnesota 1-0 in Big Road Victory

The Portland Timbers (9-7-7, 34pts) have now taken over sole possession of 4th place in the overall league standings with a 1-0 win over the NCS Minnesota Stars on Saturday evening. The Timbers went undefeated on their 2-game road trip, starting with a 1-0 win against AC St Louis last weekend and with the playoffs just over a month away, this could signal the start of the team gathering some real momentum before the season finishes.

A physical and intensely contested game, both sides played like they knew what was at stake. 28 fouls were committed in total by both clubs, a handful of yellow cards, and a red card that would eventually decide the game. For much of the 1st half, Minnesota would control the possession and tempo of the match, outshooting Portland 6-2 and creating the more dangerous opportunities. The Timbers would show some life near the end of the first half, but the match would go into the locker room tied at nil-nil.

The 2nd half was a different story for Portland. The club came out with more aggression, their passes sharper and their offense more cohesive. Portland outshot the Stars 5-4 in the 2nd half, nearly scoring on a couple occasions, and their pressure would eventually pay-off around the 63rd minute, when forward Bright Dike brought down a loose ball and busted his way past two Minnesota defenders at midfield. Dike charged down the field with defenders trailing him, one-on-one with the Star's keeper Joe Warren. Just as Dike crossed into the box, Warren recklessly tackled him to the ground and was handed a red card by the official. Another great play by Bright Dike, his relentless effort and will to press forward has become something the Timbers can really lean on in recent weeks.

Ryan Pore would knock in the ensuing penalty kick in the 68th minute, his lead-leading 13th goal of the year, and the Timbers would take a 1-0 lead. A man down for the rest of the match, Minnesota battled for the equalizer, but ultimately, the Timbers would have enough to hang on. Portland wins the season series with the Stars 2-1-1 and Minnesota (7-11-7, 28pts) now drops to 7th place in the overall league standings.

Backup goalkeeper Matt Pyzdrowski got the start for the Timbers tonight, ending Steve Cronin's 51-game regular season start streak. Pyzdrowski played well in his first full 90 minutes of league-play recording 3 saves and earning his 1st shutout of the regular season. No word of any injury or other issues with Cronin. It's likely Coach Gavin Wilkinson simply felt the need to give Pyzdrowski some on-field action, just in case there's a scenario where he's called upon in the playoffs. In any case, it's certainly an indication of this team's depth.

Another observation - the Timber's were outplayed in the 1st half and most of their problems seemed to start in the midfield, mainly not being able to control possession long enough to create scoring opportunities. However, when Taka Suzuki subbed in the 2nd half, Portland was noticeably more patient and successful at initiating offense through the middle. I can recall at least a couple plays where Taka would receive a pass with a defender on his back, maintain possession and then relieve the pressure (sometimes to his backline). For young soccer fans, this can serve as a lesson that the right pass isn't always forward, sometimes passing back and keeping possession is the best option. It's pretty hard for a team to find a rhythm if they don't keep the ball first.

Overall, I'd say the Timbers should feel pretty fortunate to leave Minnesota with 3 points. Before the red card, the Stars controlled most of the match and took more shots on goal, but it was Portland that came away with the win. And often, the shoe's been on the other foot for the Timbers this season. With 7 games left in the regular season, every match-up has a magnified importance the rest of the way. Portland is now riding a 2 game win streak as they head back to the Northwest for a 3 game home stand at PGE Park, their last 3 home games of the season. Portland will host the Austin Aztecs at 7pm, Thursday at PGE Park.

* Ross Smith also left the field near the end of the 1st half, apparently from an injury or possibly a re-aggravation of a previous injury.

Timbers Head to Minnesota for a Crucial Matchup

Portland Timbers

VS

NCS Minnesota Stars

Saturday, August 21st
5pm @ NSC Park

Live online at PortlandTimbers.com

Radio on 95.5 the Game

Portland hits the road this Saturday to play a return match against the Minnesota Stars as both teams jockey for playoff positioning with the playoffs fast approaching. Timbers (8-7-7, 31pts) are currently tied for 4th place in the USSF overall standings with 8 games remaining in the regular season. Minnesota (who played the Timbers to a 2-2 draw in their last meeting at PGE Park) trails Portland by only 3pts and in fact, there's only 4pts separating the 4th place and 8th place clubs. Every game counts the rest of the way and will have important ramifications as the teams head towards the playoffs.

The Timber's defense should see a boost with the return of team captain Ian Joy, who was forced to sit out their last match due to the red card booking he received against Minnesota on August 11th. Joy and the Timbers should be looking for some measure of revenge as they gave up a 2-1 lead at home, partly due to the ejection of Joy on a controversial call by the official. Portland's defense will need to show up with a strong performance. Minnesota has only scored 24 goals this season, but have been on a scoring tear in the last month, putting away 12 goals in their last 7 matches.

Offensively, Portland is still trying to find their groove. The team hopes that the signing of striker Ibad Muhamadu will help solve some their offensive woes and he did well in his first start last Saturday, leading the team with 5 shots on goal. The pairing of Ibad and Bright Dike has the potential to be an imposing and dominating duo upfront, a scoring punch the Timbers desperately need as they try and gain momentum before the playoffs. After Saturday, the Timbers will begin their last home-stand of the regular season with 3 games at PGE Park, starting with the 2nd place Austin Aztecs on Thursday.

** The Timbers will also play a special testimonial match in recognition of former Timber's legend Jimmy Conway. The game will be held at PGE Park at 5pm and will involve a select squad against team of former Timber players. We'll have more posted about this event in the coming week.

Timbers Rumors: Timbers to announce signing of Kalif Alhassan?

Gavin Wilkinson recently hinted on Talk Timbers that the Timbers would be signing a young prospect who they expect to make an impact in the MLS. Today John Strong tweeted "News coming today...check that St Louis box score again...". One thing that stands out on the St. Louis box score is that Kalif Alhassan is listed in the ineligible section.

Kalif Alhassan is a 19 year old from Ghana who is listed as an attacking midfielder and a forward. His first name may also be spelled Khalif. Gavin Wilkinson went on a scouting trip to Ghana in May, so this signing may be the result of that. We have no confirmation on this, so it's just a rumor at this point. The Timbers will be announcing the signing this afternoon.

Update:
It's official, the Timbers announced the signing of Kalif Alhassan for the remainder of this season.

From the Timbers official website - Timbers sign Ghanaian midfielder Kalif Alhassan.

And from Oregonlive blogger Kip Kesgard -

The MLS Numbers: How does the MLS Popularity Rank in the US?

Dropping Timber took a look at the numbers in how the MLS ranks in popularity going up against the big four in the US: NFL, NBA, MLB and NHL

Attendance
NFL
Average attendance: 67.5k (1st)
#1 Team: 89,756 average (1st)
Total attendance:  17.1 million (4th)
Total attendance per team:  535k (4th)

MLB
Average attendance: 30.3k (2nd)
#1 Team: 46,400 average (2nd)
Total attendance: 73.4 million (1st)
Total attendance per team:  2.44 million (1st)

NBA
Average attendance: 17.1k (3rd)
#1 Team: 20,725 (5th)
Total attendance: 21.1 million (3rd)
Total attendance per team: 703k (3rd)

NHL
Average attendance: 17.1k (4th)
#1 Team: 21,356 (4th)
Total attendance: 20.9 million (4th)
Total attendance per team: 696k  (4th)

MLS
Average attendance: 16.0k (5th)
The MLS average attendance rivals the NBA and NHL, and the numbers may get even closer with Vancouver and Portland coming into the fold, each with the possibility of selling out 20k seat stadiums.

#1 Team: 36,159 (3rd)
We threw in the #1 team average as a way to show the potential of the MLS.  The Sounders draw extremely well, and this season Philadelphia, Toronto and LA are drawing just as many fans on average as the top NBA and NHL teams.

Total attendance: 3.9 million (5th)
Total attendance per team: 237k (5th)
Friendlies, Champions play, and Open Cup matches would bring up the total attendance numbers for MLS teams, as well as the possible expansion to a 34 match schedule.  Figuring those numbers in could yield a total of close to 6 million in total attendance next season, still well below the other leagues.

TV Ratings
We used each league's ESPN rating (if available, Versus in the case of the NHL) in order to get a somewhat fair comparison of national TV ratings.

We also added some local data on the top local markets, where it was available.

NFL
ESPN: 9.1 (#1)
The NFL is the undisputed king of TV ratings with its short schedule and widespread popularity.
Local Markets data not available.

NBA
ESPN: 2.4 (#2)

Local Markets
  • Cavs: 8.59
  • Spurs: 6.61
  • Lakers: 3.54

MLB
ESPN: 1.6 (#3)

Local Markets
  • Red Sox: 9.46
  • Cardinals: 7.97
  • Phillies: 7.13

NHL
Versus: 0.3  (#4)

Local Markets
  • Penguins: 8.05
  • Sabres: 6.45
  • Red Wings 4.21

MLS
ESPN2: 0.2 (#5)

The MLS 0.2 average rating for ESPN2 broadcasts has remained relatively flat over the past few seasons, and is a perenially disappointing number.  Still it is close to the rating the NHL gets on Versus, although Versus is carried in an estimated 20 million fewer homes. An interesting sidenote is that the MLS carries a higher average on Spanish networks than it does on ESPN.  It remains to be seen how the latest spate of Designated Player signings will affect national TV ratings.  We will take a look at this as soon as the numbers are in.

Local Markets
Unfortunately there is very little information on how the MLS does in local markets.  I was able to find one rating for one Sounders FC TV broadcast, an impressive 4.1.  Although this local rating would not quite put it at the top of any of the other leagues, it at least shows that some local MLS fans are willing to tune in to watch their local team.
