A Rugged Draw in Carolina

With the season winding down and facing four difficult road games before the playoffs, the Portland Timbers knew it'd be important to start their road trip off with a bang. Well, there certainly was some banging going on at Carolina's Wakemed Park Saturday evening. And a whole lot of bumping and bruising too. The Timbers played the Carolina Railhawks to a scoreless draw in what was a tough and physical contest. A match that saw 30 total fouls whistled between both teams, including 4 yellow cards, 3 of those cautions given to Portland. Still, the Timbers survived a feisty defensive battle and their unbeaten streak remained intact as well. The club is now unbeaten in their last 7 matches with a record of 7-2-5 in their last 13 games played.

Another 90 minutes, another draw
After over 180 minutes of spirited competition between Portland and Carolina this year nothing has really been settled, again, each side walking away with only a single point in the standings. The teams played to a 1-1 draw earlier in June. With the tie, Portland (11-7-9, 42pts) will fall back to 4th place in the overall league table (Vancouver beat Baltimore 3-0 earlier in the day) and Carolina (10-8-8, 38 pts) will remain in 5th place overall and 2nd in the NASL conference.

A back and forth defensive battle, both teams were successful at breaking up attacks in the midfield and shutting down opportunities inside their own box. The Timbers built attacks well, but struggled to find quality chances, only taking 5 shots in the 1st half, while Carolina fired 10 shots on goal, often finding open spaces to counter up field. The 2nd half wasn't much different. Portland had the edge in controlling possession, but was unable to turn that fact into consistent chances on goal. Perhaps, the team's best shots came early in the 2nd half, a series of three corner kicks and a pair of headers on frame that were both saved by Railhawks keeper Nicolas Platter.

The intensity of the match would raise to another level around the 66th minute, when forward Bright Dike made a run into the Railhawks box and was called for a controversial yellow card. Dike appeared to be pulled down by midfielder Devon Mckenney, then in the race for the loose ball, collided with defender Daniel Woolard, both players crashing to the ground. However, it was Dike that left the exchange with a booking and stern warning from the official. Moments later, freshly subbed in Taka Suzuki would be tackled from behind as he made a run up the midfield, leading to some heated words and a bit of shoving. This would spark a flooding of fouls called by the referee (an attempt to keep control of the rising physical play), ultimately leading to another caution for Portland, this time on Suzuki for pulling a Carolina player's jersey.

Despite a handful of offensive-minded substitutions down the final stretch, Portland couldn't find the game-winning goal. The Timbers took a total of 12 shots for the match, although they were outshot by 4 on the night and even though team earned 6 corner opportunities, they were also blown for 17 total fouls, including 11 in the 2nd half. Without a doubt, both teams were involved in their share of grabbing, elbowing, and rough play - neither side willing to give an inch.

Lots of rain, but no Pore
The weather was wicked down in North Carolina Saturday evening. The gray and gloomy skies eventually gave way to rain as the 1st half came to close and would continue on through the 2nd half. By the final 15 minutes of the match, the rain was pouring down, soaking the ground, the 2,000 fans in attendance, and players alike. It was far from ideal playing conditions and likely contributed to the lack of goals or offensive rhythm by either team.

Both teams were also without key players. Midfielder and leading scorer Ryan Pore was missing in action because of personal matters and Carolina star Daniel Paladini was out of the starting line-up nursing a previous injury. With other lineup changes for Portland (Steve Purdy out and Mamadou Danso returning from a national team call), somebody needed to step up. Defenders Stephen Keel and Quavas Kirk were given the start on the backline and both filled in admirably. Midfielder Rodrigo Lopez had the big shoes to step into, taking over Pore's spot on the left wing and was impressive, creating dangerous chances especially in the 1st half.

Coaching Strategy
The Timbers opened up the game using their new 4-3-3 formation, with Lopez and Ibad Muhamadu on the wings and Dike pushing high up front in the middle. In the 2nd half however, it appeared that Portland switched back to a 4-4-2 system, playing Dike and Ibad at forward and moving Lopez back to the midfield. Coach Wilkinson has stated in the past that he would use the 4-3-3 depending on situation and opponent. Perhaps, he felt without Pore as one of the wings upfront that it would be more effective to use a 4-4-2 where Lopez can play his more natural position. What do you think?

Coach Gavin Wilkinson also made some interesting substitutions, really pushing for a goal late in the game. Forward Doug DeMartin and Taka Suzuki were brought in, as well as midfielder Kalif Alhassan. Danso was also subbed in to spell Dike's tired legs, playing out of position at forward for the final 10 minutes. An interesting sight to see Danso leading the attack, could we see Futty playing striker again in the future? More than likely no, but either way, Coach Wilkinson's substitutions show his faith in the roster and the depth that it carries.

Overall, Portland may not have gotten the result they wanted, but have nothing to hang their heads over. Keeper Steve Cronin was able to record his 11th shutout on the season and the Timbers displayed top effort tonight, fighting hard for 90 minutes against a quality playoff team. Now, with 3 games left in the regular season, Portland will get a week off before they head back out on the road in a return match against the Puerto Rico Islanders at Juan Ramon Stadium on Saturday.

Game Preview: Final Four on the Road

Watch Live Online @ PortlandTimbers.com

The Portland Timbers (11-7-8, 41pts) will finish their final four games of the regular season on the road as they head south to take on the Carolina Railhawks (10-8-7, 37pts) this Saturday at WakeMed Soccer Park. The Timber's have experienced a few ups and downs this season, but have rallied in recent weeks and are now riding a 6 game unbeaten streak, including only 2 losses in their last 12 matches. Portland is tied for 3rd overall in the USSF standings, clinching a playoff spot earlier this week, but remains in 3rd place in the USL conference, trailing 2nd place Rochester by 7 points. The Railhawks have made a small push in standing as well. Currently, 5th place in the overall league table and 2nd in the NASL conference, Carolina has crept within 4 points of Portland, placing added importance on the outcome of their match this weekend in terms of playoff positioning.

Coming off an emotional 1-0 victory over Puerto Rico this past Thursday, the last match to be played at PGE Park before renovations begin, the Timbers must maintain their focus if they hope to keep building positive momentum before the postseason. The Timbers will look to improve on their 4-4-3 record on the road as they continue to evolve and grow together as a team. Portland has added three new players in the last month as well as experimenting with changes to their system of play on the field. Defender Kevin Goldthwaite should see his first action sometime before the regular season ends and it wouldn't be surprising to see Coach Gavin Wilkinson find more playing time for midfielder Kalif Alhassan as well. Also, in an attempt to improve offensively, the Timbers have used a 4-3-3 formation in their last 3 matches, scoring 5 goals with a record of 2-0-1 in those games.

So how are the changes going overall? So far, so good it appears. Defensively, the Timbers continue to be stingy, keeper Steve Cronin and the rest of the team have held 4 of their last 5 opponents scoreless. However, Portland's resolve will be given a stern test in the final month of the season. Three out of the four teams Portland will face on the road trip are playoff teams and the one exception, Baltimore, has beaten them twice already this year. Certainly, the intensity and competitive spirit of these remaining matches will be extremely high as teams continue to jockey for playoff positioning down the stretch run.

About Carolina

In their first meeting back in June, Portland let 2 points slip from their hands in a disappointing draw to Carolina at PGE Park, allowing midfielder Daniel Paladini to score a late-game equalizer in stoppage time. The Railhawks are a dangerous team and are 2nd in the league in total goals scored with 35. Striker Etienne Barbara leads a balanced scoring attack with 7 goals and 2 assists on the year. Carolina is coming off a 3-0 win over Baltimore and is 3-2-0 in their last 5 matches. However, at home the Railhawks have struggled slightly, with a record of only 4-5-3 at WakeMed Park.

Also, Carolina has recently signed Mexican legend Claudio Suarez, who leads the Mexican national team in caps with 178, playing in the 1994, 1998, and 2006 World Cups. The veteran defender, who has been given the nickname El Emperador (The Emperor) by his fans, made his first appearance with Carolina last Saturday in a friendly against Pumas Morelos and will likely see some action against the Timbers as well.

Timbers Clinch Playoff Spot

The season isn't over yet, but the Timbers have solidified a spot in the 2010 USSF D-2 playoffs. The Timbers play the final four matches of the regular season on the road and the better the results, the better the seed for the Timbers.

The Timbers are currently in 3rd place in the USL conference and in 4th place overall in the division. The overall points leader at the end of the season will get the No. 1 seed, while the top team from the other conference will get the No. 2 seed. The rest of the six teams will be seeded according to their points regardless of conference.

The USSF D-2 Pro League playoffs begin in early October, following the conclusion of the league’s regular-season schedule on Oct. 3. The league will announce additional details about the postseason, including playoff format and dates, at a later time. The Timbers will also unveil playoff details, regarding venue, tickets and kickoff times, at a later date.

Walking on Sunshine and Sunflowers

The Timbers celebrate with the fans after the match, the last game at PGE Park.

A special night and a special moment, and with the stars in alignment for a momentous occasion, the Timbers were able to pull through in truly dramatic fashion defeating Puerto Rico 1-0 Thursday evening. On a night which marked the last soccer game to be played at PGE Park (before renovations begin), the franchise was able to celebrate its 1 millionth fan in attendance since 2001. The sellout crowd of 15,418, the team's 5th sellout of the year, witnessed an important and memorable moment in Timber's history. An emotional evening for players, coaches, and fans alike; it exemplified why Portland has earned the moniker of Soccer City USA. Simply put, you can't fake moments like this.

"It was great. The support has been amazing all year, especially tonight." Said forward Doug DeMartin. "Our fans are just awesome and to come out and get a win and to do it late like that with a lot of drama. It's a lot of fun."

In the 80th minute, fate had set the stage. With the North End leading the way, fans across the stadium began to hold sunflowers up in the air, a gesture that not only commemorated the final home match, but also honored one of the most significant and special moments in Timbers folklore, the Sunshine Goal.

With the stadium a sea of sunflowers and fans singing "You are my Sunshine" in unison, the tension and intensity of the match began to build as the score was knotted at 0-0. Then in the 83rd minute, team captain Ian Joy would send a searching long ball over Puerto Rico's backline, finding a streaking DeMartin in the offensive third. DeMartin would shake past his defender, getting into the box before sending a cross through traffic which found a leaping Ryan Pore, who headed the ball into the back of the net for what would prove to be the game-winning goal. The score is Pore's 15th of season and he currently leads the league in goals and total points.

"Ian played me a good through ball so I could get behind (the defense)." Said DeMartin. "And I got their center-back where we wanted towards the endline and I just tried to get across (the box) and put the ball in a dangerous position. And Ryan does such a great job of getting himself into (threatening positions) and finishing those balls."

"I just threw my body at it." Said Pore with a grin on his face. "I'm still not exactly sure what I hit it with - my head, my arm, my foot, whatever it was thankfully it went into the back of the net."

After the goal, Pore sprinted towards the west end of the field, diving and tumbling into the corner flag before being toppled by his teammates.

"My mind was going everywhere (after the goal)," Said Pore about the moment, a smile still pasted across his face. "I didn't know what to do, where to go, I just ran. But I'm so overjoyed that we were able to get 3pts tonight, especially in front of these fans."

A night filled with special occasions, the match also saw 7-year Timber veteran Scot Thompson make his final appearance at PGE Park. Thompson checked into the game early in the 1st half after defender Steve Purdy collided with a Puerto Rico player and was forced to leave the game due to blurred vision. Thompson would play an inspired match, making his presence felt all over the field Thursday evening, and was a strong contributing factor in the Timber's victory. The Timbers 2010 Community Play of the Year Award was also given to Thompson upon the conclusion of the match.

"It was pretty emotional." Reflected Thompson. "With this many people here, and all the sunflowers were great. It's kind of an end of an era, but (overall) it was just a very, very happy moment."

The 4-3-3 and More
For the 3rd match in a row, Portland primarily operated out of a 4-3-3 system, moving Pore upfront on the wing and using two attacking-midfielders with a defensive stopper behind them protecting the middle. The Timbers have struggled to find consistent offense throughout the season, but the new formation seems to help the team create better passing angles and find space.

"It puts more responsibility on our wide players to move forward," said Coach Gavin Wilkinson. "We're trying to pressure a little more and cause more problems for the opponent."

"It plays to our strengths." said DeMartin. "Playing out wide gives me a little more room to play, more time and space, so it's easier to get involved. And with Bright being so strong up front, he's able to split their two center-backs, so it creates a lot of problems for teams."

Added Pore, "We're a little more dangerous in the 4-3-3 and it really creates a tough dynamic for the defense to defend."

Portland dominated most of the 90 minutes of play, not only controlling possession, but keeping Puerto Rico out of the defensive third and only allowing them 4 shots on the entire night. Keeper Steve Cronin, who has been solid all year, recorded his 10th shutout of the season and Portland's backline was stingy, smart, and aggressive.

"The mentality of the team was extremely good," Said Coach Wilkinson. "We dominated and dictated the tempo of play, winning possession, overall it was a great performance and it showed professionalism and maturity by our whole squad."

A physical and ugly match at times, 6th place Puerto Rico didn't go down without a fight. Opening the 2nd half, the Timbers began to slow down slightly (perhaps the only period of the match which they didn't completely control) and Coach Wilkinson made some substitutions to try and regain momentum.

"We were fatiguing a little bit and as we made the changes," said Wilkinson, "Then we began take over and dominate the game again."

"It shows the mentality of this team, to keep fighting through adversity," said Pore. "And the fan's energy all night was really what kept us going."

Wilkinson summed up the team's effort, "We gave as good as we got."

Looking Forward
With the win the Timbers (11-7-8, 41pts) have furthered solidified their spot in the league standings are only 5pts behind Austin, who is currently 2nd in the USL division. Portland is now riding a 6 game unbeaten streak and will take a good dose of positive momentum with them as they head out on a difficult 4 game road trip to finish out the season.

"We still need to get points if we wanna put ourselves in a good position for the playoffs." Said DeMartin. "We're on a good roll, so we need to focus on keeping that going."

The team will get a week off before heading down to Carolina to start their tough road schedule. The Timbers will then play return matches against Puerto Rico and Baltimore (teams they beat at home this week) before closing out the season against league rivals Vancouver.

"Guys are looking forward to it." Said Pore. "The confidence is high in the locker room and our form is going the right way heading into the playoffs."

Overall, a celebratory night and one that players and fans wont soon forget - a storybook ending that any Hollywood producer would be envious of.

"It's been ten years of an amazing development of a soccer organization that continues to move forward." said Wilkinson. "And for me, I'm just delighted to be a part of it."

"The last moment here, it's one we'll always remember." Said Savage. "We've had a lot of good moments here with the fans, but it's always the last ones that really stay forever."

Alaska Airlines Announced as Kit Sponsor

It's official.  Merritt Paulson announced at the airport today that the Timbers will have Alaska Airlines on their kits.   The jersey designs won't be released until December. Once again the rumors turned out to be 100% correct- now it's time to guess who will get to rename PGE Park.

Merritt Paulson and the entire Timbers staff have done a fantastic job elevating the profile of professional soccer in Portland and the Pacific Northwest, and this strategic alliance is one of many reasons why we believe the Timbers will be very successful when they debut in MLS next year," said MLS Commissioner Don Garber. "What makes this new partnership so special is the fact that Alaska Airlines has such a strong presence in Portland, helping to build excitement in a region already so rich in soccer tradition.

Game Preview: The Last Home Game

Portland Timbers

VS
Puerto Rico Islanders

Thursday September 2nd
7pm @ PGE Park
Online live @ PortlandTimbers.com
Radio on 95.5 the Game

It's almost here. Thursday evening the Portland Timbers will not only play their last home game of the season, but will also play their final regular season game at PGE Park. Next season, the Timbers will be promoted to the MLS and their stadium will be upgraded with them. Along with a new name and sponsor, the park will be redesigned during the offseason, transforming it into one of the top soccer-specific venues in the country. Since its creation in 1926, PGE Park (originally Multnomah Stadium) has been a landmark site, full of tradition, and meaningful sports moments for this city. Get ready to add another one to the list. When Portland hosts Puerto Rico tomorrow evening expect a sellout crowd. Expect excitement. Expect the fans to honor the franchise and this organization for all the great times they've provided and for all that they've done for the community. Expect the team to return those sentiments with some passionate play on the field. Expect something special.

"It's gonna be very special." Said Ryan Pore when asked about his expectations for tomorrow evening. "These fans have helped to put Portland on the map soccer-wise and we gotta go out and try to thank them for that, and that starts with our performance on Thursday."

"We're really excited to play in front of these fans," Added Bright Dike. "They give us energy in the games, so its just exciting and fun to play your best for them."

However, as jubilant and emotional as an occasion that the last home game might be, the Timber's opponents Puerto Rico could probably care less. Bottom line, there's still a soccer game that needs to be won.

"It's exciting, but it's just another game." Said midfielder Keith Savage. "Hopefully, we'll have a big crowd - we wanna go out of this stadium with a win."

The Timbers (10-7-8, 38pts) have sole possession of 4th place in the league table and are 6pts ahead of sixth-place Puerto Rico (8-7-8, 32pts). With only 5 games remaining in the regular season, Portland continues to build positive momentum as they move closer and closer to the postseason. So far so good. The Timbers are currently unbeaten in their last five matches. And perhaps more importantly, they've managed to score 8 goals in the last 5 games, a sign that their offensive is becoming more comfortable, confident, and cohesive.

"We're on a roll right now," Said Savage. "We haven't been beaten in a little while and we've been playing better and better. Our attitude is right and that's what's important."

The 4-3-3 Formation
The Timber's debuted a new formation this past Sunday in their 3-0 victory over Baltimore - the 4-3-3. For most of the season, Coach Gavin Wilkinson has opted to use the traditional 4-4-2 system, perhaps the most widely used formation in soccer. However, with the team's lack of offensive production, the team needed a change, something to consistently create better chances, and the 4-3-3 seems like a possible answer.

How does this system work and how does it specifically help the team? On Sunday, Pore was moved from his usual midfield position up to left-forward, putting 3 players in front and leaving 3 in the midfield.

"It puts me in my natural position as a left winger." Said Pore. "We're able to keep possession in the midfield more with Johan (Claesson) and Keith in the attacking midfield and with James (Marcelin) or Tony (McManus) underneath protecting from behind us. It gives us a lot of options."

"It frees us to go forward a little more and we can be a little more creative." Said Savage. "We have two strong holder-mids to sit behind the guys up front and (that makes) us tougher to defend and more exciting to watch."

Portland played one of their best games of the season using the 4-3-3. In fact, Coach Wilkinson said that is was maybe the "best 20 minute of soccer he's seen in the last 2 years". The Timbers looked fluid and were able to pass the ball efficiently, keeping possession for long stretches. With only three players at midfield instead of four, there seemed to be more space for the team to operate, allowing for more scoring chances, and allowing the team to bring more players up on the attack.

"It gives us more options going forward and we start higher on the field," Said Savage. "Instead of sitting back in our own half and having a lot of side-to-side, we're able to do a lot up and down the field and get in behind the forwards. So it's fun to play in. "

"When you play a 4-3-3 its gonna give a (defender) more space." Added defender Steve Purdy. "For instance, with Ryan Pore on my side and he's stretching the (opposing) team's defense then I have all that space in between. So I can take that space and use it to my advantage."

And on the defensive side of the ball? How does the 4-3-3 effect the job of the backline?

"For the most part it's pretty much the same," Says Purdy, "But you do gotta be aware of different runners coming in from different angles and different positions out on the field."

It wouldn't be surprising to see the Timber's use this formation again Thursday evening, as they matched their highest scoring output of the season Sunday. Still, the team could make changes to their system at any point, depending on the opponent or the strategic need for that game.

"When everyone's playing off each other it really doesn't really matter what (formation) we're in as long as everyone's in tune and playing well." Said Dike.

Mixing with the New Blood
Along with adapting to changes in the playing formation, the Timbers must also incorporate new players into the system with only a month left before the playoffs. In the last couple weeks, Portland has signed 3 new free agents, including forward Ibad Muhamadu, midfielder Kalif Alhassan, and defender Kevin Goldthwaite. Top talent with a chance to move up to the MLS in 2011. How has bringing in "new blood" effected the team's chemistry this late in the season?

"We've all been around professional franchises enough to know that their gonna bring in different players and evaluate them." Said Pore. "It is what is, but you just gotta concentrate on what you're doing, your job, and do your best for the team."

"The players that are coming in are quality players, so it's not as hard as you might think." Said Dike. "It's not like college where you're bringing in a freshman to try and learn a new system. They're professionals and veterans, people that I can still learn from."

Overall, the players have kept a positive attitude about all the adjustments going on around them. Said Savage: "We've got a lot of talent, but it's a good problem to have. The level of practice is only better because of it. Whoever is put on the field is gonna play their hardest and if they don't play well then someone else can come in. So it's not a problem and I don't think it effects chemistry, it just makes everyone play harder."

"Change is always tough, but this whole year has been change for everyone." Reflected Purdy. "At the beginning of the season with some of the games that came down to the wire maybe we didn't get the best result, but we're a team that kinda thrives off a little bit of adversity, so now I feel like we can adapt to any kind of change that's (put in front of us)."

About The Islanders
Portland's not the only team in the USSF that's been playing well recently. Puerto Rico is riding a 9 match unbeaten streak and are coming of a 3-2 win over Carolina this past weekend. The outcome of Thursday's match could have a significant impact on the standings, a possible 6 point swing in either direction. A win puts Portland 9pts ahead, but a loss would leave Puerto Rico only 3pts behind with enough games left on the season to still catch up.

"They're right on our heels points wise." Said Pore. "It's important for us to jump on them early and get the crowd involved and feed of (that energy)."

"They're a good team," Said Dike. "We've gotta focus and make sure we play our game."

The Islanders have a solid offensive team, scoring the 5th most goals in the league, finding the back of the net 31 times this season. Forwards Nicholas Addlery and David Foley have lead the way offensively - Addlery with 6 goals, 4 assists and Foley scoring 8 goals this season. However, Addlery could be the biggest handful for the Timber's backline. The former DC United player, is an imposing and athletic Jamaican born striker, who has scored 2 goals and recorded 2 assists in his last 3 games.

"They like to play off their top guy, they have a strong forward and they're gonna be trying to find him most of the time, so we have to dig deep in the back and physically match up against him. If he does win some of those balls, we gotta make sure we win those second balls, just make sure we control the second balls and clean things up. "

"It's just a huge game." Said Pore. "There's a lot of importance in this game and we know that and the fans know that, so we're looking (to do all we can) to get a win."

Rumors: Timbers To Announce Kit Sponsor

The Portland Timbers will be announcing the kit sponsor tomorrow morning at the Portland International Airport.  Additionally they have confirmed that the teams MLS Uniforms and training wear will be revealed in December.

Most are guessing that this is the Alaska Airlines sponsorship announcement. We will have the news as soon as we hear confirmation.

Mandjou Keita Signs Overseas

The writing was on the wall....

Goal.com
- I-League: Pune FC Sign Former Salgaocar Striker Mandjou Keita

Mandjou Keita was the 2009 USL points leader and a big part of the Timbers 2009 unbeaten streak.

Unfortunately, things didn't pan out out Keita's way in 2010, as he struggled in games for us. He came from his loan spell with Salgaocar and scored against AC St. Louis, but that goal was lost in a 3 point drought.

Keita's 2009 prowess never panned out this season and he was relegated to the bench. The 2010 season slowly unfolded and Keita was MIA. The points Keita put up in 2009, would have been very helpful this year. Mandjou Keita we wish you all the best in the I-League, and hopefully someday you and your family will watch a Timbers match in the North End with the rest of us.

We wish Keita the best of luck in his endeavors. Thanks for all the goals. Here's a sample...

Timbers Push

Timbers Push brings the Timbers and MLS news that fans are talking about to the forefront.  We'll highlight stories we might have missed throughout the week, link you back to the articles we want to make sure you read, and possibly throw in a few rumors here and there.

#1Sunflowers and Formal Wear on Thursday  - Timber Jim and the Timbers army are asking that fans bring a sunflower to the match against Puerto Rico tomorrow.  At the 80th minute, hold up your sunflower and join fans for a round of "You are my Sunshine" and then continue to hold them for the rest of the match.  Some North End fans will also be enjoying their final Thirsty Thursday in Division gussied up in ties, formal dresses and other formal wear.  Discuss on our forums
#2PGE Park Rename and Kit Sponsor- The contract with PGE ran out and it's anyone's guess who will take over. There have been a lot of rumors that Alaska Airlines may be sponsoring the kits, would they also want their name on the stadium? With all but one luxury suite already sold, the Timbers appear to be having little problem attracting attention from local businesses. We'd expect some kind of announcement on either the kits or the stadium in the next couple of weeks. Discuss on our forums.
#3Will Scot Play?- As Kevin pointed out in the Baltimore recap, there is a possibility that the Timbers Army have seen Scot Thompson play in front of them for the last time. Don't count on it though, Gavin Wilkinson might just find a way to insert him one last time at PGE.   Here's what he said last Sunday:

"It was an opportunity to honor Scot and for Scot to be rewarded for everything he's done for this organization. I thought it was deserved, deserved of him, his work ethic, his commitment to this organization, for the fans to see him and give him the recognition."   Read more

USSF Division 2 Playoff Race: Early September

We are nearing the end of the season and Rochester still maintains it's tenuous grip on first place, with a two point lead over Austin, but the Aztex still have three games on hand, and have a good chance to regain the top spot.   Once again, Montreal has made a late season push (and the bad teams are doing what they do best, losing) and moved up into seventh place.  Could they snatch another cup from the bottom of the playoff seeding?   Tie-breaker rules have also come into play, with Minnesota edging out Tampa Bay in head-to-head matches.  These two face each other for the last game of the season- it could be a big match.

How the race currently stands:
#1 Rochester (1st in USL, 48 points, 1.85 ppg)
#2 Vancouver (1st in NASL, 40 points, 1.60 ppg)
#3 Austin (46 points, 2.00 ppg)
#4 Portland (38 points, 1.52 ppg)
#5 Carolina (34 points, 1.42 ppg)
#6 Puerto Rico (32 points, 1.39 ppg)
#7 Montreal (31 points, 1.24 ppg)
#8 Minnesota (28 points, 1.12 ppg) by head-to-head tiebreaker

No team has been eliminated from contention, so here is the rest of the field:
#9 Tampa Bay (28 points, 1.12 ppg)
#10 Baltimore (24 points, 0.96 ppg)
#11 St. Louis (23 points, 0.96 ppg)
#12 Miami (20 points, 0.83 ppg)

Where the Timbers Stand
With a ten point lead over ninth seeded Tampa Bay, barring total collapse, the Timbers are all but assured of a playoff spot.  Portland still has four matches against winning teams, including a home and away series against sixth seeded Puerto Rico.  The away game against the Railhawks could also have important seeding implications.  It is unlikely that Portland can catch Austin or Rochester, so a fourth seed is probably the highest they can get.   Portland is 4-4-3 in away matches this year.

Portland's Remaining Games
Puerto Rico (8-7-8)
@Carolina (9-8-7)
@Puerto Rico (8-7-8)
@Baltimore (6-13-6)
@Vancouver (9-3-13)
(W-L-T in parentheses)
