CONCACAF Champions League

The CONCACAF champions league is made up 24 teams (9 from North America, 14 from Central America and 3 from the Caribbean). The US fields four teams in the new format, all from the MLS in the 2009-10 league: Houston, Columbus, New York and D.C. United. Columbus and Houston were automatically placed in the Group stage, while D.C United advanced from the qualifying round. The NY Red Bulls were eliminated in the qualifier by W Connection of Trinidad.
The Group stage consists of six games within one of the four groups. So far none of the US teams have been eliminated within the Group Stage. The top two teams from each group advance to a playoff bracket style Championship Round.

Those watching Fox Soccer Channel tonight saw D.C. United destroy Jabloth 5-1. The Houston-Pachuca matchup is currently in progress with the Dynamo trailing 1-0. Pachuca has won the CONACAF Champions Cup in 2 of the last 3 years.

The new format for the CONCACAF Champions cup is exciting and since it allows for 4 US teams to participate each year, we could see the Portland Timbers playing for a shot at the cup in a couple years.

Update:
Dynamo still down 1-0 to Pachuca at the 51st minute

Puerto Rico dominating the 2nd half. Rhinos look unenthusiastic and are almost playing like the series is over already.

Burnley FC Watch

Burnley's first season in the English Premier League in 33 years has led to a small streak of three wins at home and three losses on the road. This 3-0-3 record puts Burnley in a comfortable ninth place out of twenty teams in the EPL. Burnley's first two wins were against EPL powerhouses Manchester United and Everton. Burnley's tide of killing the big boys ended when they lost 3-0 at Chelsea and 4-0 to Liverpool. Last weeks win over Sunderland kept Burnley's unbeaten streak alive, but lost starting striker Martin Paterson possibly for the season with a bad knee injury. Next up is a road game against the Spurs from Tottenham this Saturday.

Timbers Getting Their Game On

The Timbers aren't taking their first round bye sitting down. Today they play the Kitsap Pumas at PGE Park at 4pm. The game is only open to season ticket holders, but don't fret there are rumors abound that they won't play a full 90 minutes. You may remember the Kitsap Pumas from earlier in the season as the Timbers traveled to Bremerton, Washington to knock the Pumas out of the US Open Cup. Kitsap will be a great way to keep our boys fresh and allow coach Wilkinson to try out a few things. I am also impressed with management's decision to open the scrimmage to season ticket holders only, as those who bite the bullet, deserve some extra rewards. Those of us who want to see scrimmage but don't have season tickets have a few mostly bad choices,
  • stand on the 18th street side and look through the fence, which is really not that bad of a view
  • flirt with the gatekeepers
  • beg, plead and cry to be let in
  • scan the park for a weakness, then exploit it
  • impersonate a Kitsap trainer and explain that the Jameson bottle is actually a new energy drink needed by your squad
  • pose as a bad writer for a half-assed blog and hope.

Will the Timbers be playing in the USL next season?

The USL first division is in a state of turmoil. A coalition of teams, called the Team Owners Association (TOA) has been in talks with the USL to move towards a league owned by the teams. Five teams (Carolina, Miami FC, Minnesota, Montreal and Vancouver) have said they are not committed to playing for the USL next season. That would leave the division with only six teams, and there are some indications Cleveland may not be around next season either. To make matters even worse for the USL, the TOA has been in talks with MLS- possibly to create a second tier MLS2 league (more). In addition to the USL-1 teams, the TOA also includes the Atlanta Silverbacks, St. Louis Soccer United and the Tampa Rowdies.

What does this mean for the Timbers next season? It puts them in limbo because in 2011 they will be moving to the MLS. The USL-1 division would only have four other teams, obviously not enough to make a league. One option for the USL is to move up some of its second division teams, but that didn't work so well with Cleveland as they are in serious financial trouble. Another is to try and tap new markets for expansion. If the TOA was to cut a deal with the MLS to form MLS2, would it make sense for the Timbers to break ties with the USL a year early? Probably not, as they have a good history with the league, but 2010 is a complete mystery right now.

The best thing for the USL, the teams, and the fans, would be for the TOA, USL and MLS to unite and create a second divison for the MLS. Timbers in MLS2 in 2010 and MLS1 in 2011? Make it happen!

POSTGAME: Timbers Celebrate End of Season with a 2-1 Victory

The Timbers finished the regular season on a high note and gathered some valuable momentum heading into the postseason, as they beat the Cleveland City Stars 2-1 in front of a boisterous and jubilant PGE Park crowd. Despite the outcome being mostly meaningless, over 12,000 Timber fans turned out for the match to show their appreciation for their team's outstanding efforts and accomplishments this season. The Timbers were able to return the favor, playing an inspired and exciting match of soccer, providing their fans with the proper occasion and atmosphere to celebrate such a historic year. After the match, many of the players climbed into the front rows of the stands to personally thank them for their support. And in perhaps the ultimate gesture of admiration, the Timber's Army created each of the player's images in the likeness of Simpson characters. Talk about cool.

What did Coach Wilkinson say to these guys in his pregame speech? The Timbers came out of the gate firing tonight - Claesson finding Josten with a nice lead pass, who then deftly lobbed it over the Star's keeper, Gilstrap, to put the Timbers ahead 6 minutes into the match. The 1st half belonged to Portland, outshooting the Stars 11-8, and forcing Gilstrap to make 4 saves on night. The 2nd half was mostly the same. It was a fast paced, up-and-down game with the Stars getting their share of opportunities, finally breaking through for their only goal in the 63rd minute. However, it was George Josten's night, as he scored 2 goals for the game. His second coming on a pass across the box from Keita, Josten gathering it in, turning, and blasting a low shot past two defenders and the keeper for the score.

Momentum and focus have been the lingering concerns following the Timbers recent poor play, but it seems Portland has answered many of those doubts with their solid performance tonight. Much like its been all year, Portland's attack was relentless against Cleveland tonight, outshooting them 19-15 overall. With the exception of Mcmanus, every Timber starter took a shot on goal, Keita and Josten attempting 4 shots a piece. In their last match, Portland found their opportunities, but couldn't get quality shots on target. Not the case this time, as they looked much more patient and passed the ball efficiently, finding creative ways to get into attacking situations. Mostly, they looked like they were having fun out there tonight.

It was great to see Johan Claesson on the pitch playing well again. Claesson, recently returned from injury, looked sharp as ever and ready for the playoffs. He was aggressive with 2 shot attempts and of course, the assist to Josten. Just in time to give this team even more added depth as it gears up for the upcoming playoffs. The Timbers needed to be playing their best soccer down the stretch and with plenty of chance for rest before the postseason, Coach Wilkinson pretty much stuck with his core rotation (Danso and Pore sat) and gave this team a chance to find their chemistry on the field again. Hopefully, it will pay off.

The Commissioner's Cup winning Timbers will get a 1st round bye in the playoffs, their semi-final matchup is expected to start on October 1st. With the USl regular season finishing its games up this weekend, the final seeding for the playoffs has not been completely finalized. Therefore, the Timbers potential opponent remains to be determined, let's hope it's not Puerto Rico. We'll keep you posted.

GAME PREVIEW: The Final Game Before the Playoffs

Portland Timbers

Vs.
Cleveland City Stars

Thirsty Thursday @ PGE Park
September 17th, 7:00PM
LIVE on FSN

Cheers! It's been an amazing season for the Portland Timbers and the timing could not be better. For a franchise that's scheduled to be promoted to the MLS soon, it's been a year full of unforgettable moments, thrilling victories, and historic achievements. The unbeaten streak. The Commisioner's Cup. A renewed rivalry with Seattle. The team's loyal fanbase is growing larger and more enthusiastic each year, couple that with a new stadium and added local media coverage, and it would seem that soccer is about to make a big splash in the City of Roses. After a rocky start, to say the least, things are starting to take off and the MLS will indeed find a welcoming crowd in Portland.

However, things on the field aren't going quite as well at the moment. The Timbers did start another streak after going 24 unbeaten, but it was the wrong kind. Currently in the midst of a 2 game losing streak and having lost 3 of their last 4; Portland will try and right the ship against Cleveland tommorrow night, the club's final game of the regular season. Despite controlling possession and attempting more shots during the match, the Timbers lost to the last-place Stars 1-0 on Sunday, a meaningless, but still dissapointing outcome. The Timbers will have to be more effecient on offense and be more patient as well, waiting to get quality shots on target. If the Timbers didn't learn their lesson this weekend they better - this Cleveland team isn't one you can just overlook. They're young, hungry, and full of players looking to prove themselves to anyone who's willing to watch.

Although the outcome of this game remains inconsequential to the standings, the Timbers need to be playing their best soccer heading into the postseason. I'd expect Coach Wilkinson to play most of his starters and core rotation players tommrrow night. With a couple weeks before the playoffs begin and Portland waiting even longer becuase of their 1st round bye, finding time in between to rest legs shouldn't be a problem. Getting back onto the right track should be this team's priority, as the last thing they'd want are confidence issue to creep up this late in the year. Aggression, intensity, and defense have been the calling cards of this team all year, but have they lost their focus? But perhaps more importantly, if they have, can they get it back before it's too late?

Montreal Impact and Beckham in bed for MLS bid?

The rumor mill is turning and cranking out a story that the Montreal Impact are working with sex panther David Beckham in a bid for an MLS team. Montreal has been making a strong bid for a MLS franchise, as it is already a successful USL franchise with great attendance figures and a semi successful team of inbreeds. Yours truly at one point feared that Montreal's bid for a team would steal our chance to join the MLS ranks. So the David Beckham rumors are just that rumors, Beckham and the Impact's owners have not confirmed any of this, but it is an interesting twist in the expansion of the MLS. Beckham has the cash and resources to make a successful franchise, but Montreal is poised to be successful with or without Becks. I think Beckham would be better off helping a struggling franchise such as FC Dallas or helping jump start another city's bid. For more information on the Beckham and Montreal sex rumors go to Ottawa Citizen.

Weekend Update

  • We apologize for our absence this weekend. The Dropping Timber staff had a busy weekend including marriages, bachelor parties, watching Dolemite, top secret sniper missions to countries you have never heard of, Portland zoo trips, gittin' er done, chowing Muchas Gracias burritos, playing kickball, attending champagne brunches, and of course, watching Timber games.
  • The Good: The Timbers clinched the Commissioner's Cup yesterday after Carolina took care of Puerto Rico 2-1. As a result of winning the regular season, the Timbers will have a bye in the first round of the playoffs.
  • The Bad: Portland could have clinched on Friday night, but was stunned at home by the Aztex 2-1, with their only goal being an own goal.
  • The Ugly: Portland fell 1-0 to basement dwelling Cleveland City tonight, in another shocking loss. Cleveland's 3 yellow cards, a late red card, six minutes of stoppage time, and a huge shot differential weren't enough for the Timbers to pull together to take even a draw away from the game.

GAME PREVIEW: Timbers Will Attempt to Clinch the Commissioner's Cup

Portland Timbers

VS
Austin Aztex

7:00PM Friday September 11th
@ PGE Park

Online LIVE @ USLLive.com

Radio 95.5 the Game

With a win or a draw in Friday's matchup against Austin, the Timbers will win this year's Commissioner's Cup, awarded to the team that finishes in 1st place in the USL's regular season. Thanks to Minnesota's surprising 5-2 routing of Puerto Rico this evening, the Timbers 5 point lead grew even more secure in the standings. With another point, the best the competition could do is match the Timber's point total and fortunately for Portland they own every important head-to-head tiebreaker. After playing the Aztex, the Timbers will finish the regular season with 2 games against last place Cleveland before starting preparations for the playoffs, which begin in two weeks. It will be a raucous and celebratory environment inside PGE Park tomorrow night, as Portland's supporters cheer for the franchise's 2nd Commissioner's Cup, the first won in 2004.

Austin is a team that shouldn't be overlooked and they'll be eager to play the role of spoiler. Already eliminated from a chance at the postseason, this is still a team full of young, talented, and hopeful players who'll be looking to show potential scouts that they can play regardless of their team's record. Although, Portland owns the season series 2-0-0 against Austin, both matches have been close, the Timbers managing late game goals to pull out close wins. The question remains whether Portland can maintain its motivation and close out the year strong. Often they've played down to their competition level, struggling with teams that shouldn't be a problem on paper.

The Timber's reliable defense has been their saving grace often this year and last match was no different. Cronin got his 10th shutout on the year and Keel played well enough to earn his 3rd USL team of the week honors. Our offense struggled last match (to be fair Keita had a DNP), but even though they fired shots, it was quality and efficiency that was lacking. We'll see if they can iron out those kinks, although much will depend on who gets the actual minutes on the field. Also, beating a team twice in a row is always a challenging prospect, so expect Austin to give the Timbers their best shot.

With the deepest team in the USL, look for Coach Wilkinson to utilize their advantage this upcoming week, resting some core players and dipping down into his bench. With players like Keita and Claesson recovering from injuries and players Rodrigo Lopez and Ivan Becerra recently signed, the Timbers will continue to mix and match lineups, something their Coach hasn't been afraid to do this season. Although most teams would be envious of Portland's depth, the concern might arise whether consistency could be lost to comfort. In other words, could the Timber's lose momentum or focus heading into the playoffs if Coach Wilkinson tinkers with the lineups too much? Are you worried they could lose their step and get out of their rhythm, so to speak? Either way it will be a gorgeous and warm day in Portland tomorrow night, so expect a packed house, big attendance numbers, and a hyped-up Timber's Army. It's going to be a fun one.

Players to Watch
Eddie Johnson - Austin's leading goal scorer and team leader in shot attempts returned to action against the Timbers last match. The veteran forward took 2 shots at goal on Monday, adding to his total of 54 for the year. He was pretty active last game, so the Timber's defense will need to mark up on him tough, not letting him get in behind the line for runs.

Sullivan Silva - Property of Real Salt Lake, but currently on loan, the 21-year old Brazilian has been a productive and exciting player for the Aztex. He's overcome his inexperience to score 3 goals and tally 3 assists, considered a possible future MLS star by some, he'll be one of the hungry prospects looking to show off his skills.

Miguel Gallardo - Goal-keeping will be a big key. With the end of the season close and a somewhat meaningless matchup against a bad team, the play on the pitch should be loose and high scoring. Both keepers should get tested, Gallardo will be extra active, as he was forced to make 6 saves in the last match. But who knows? Their last game ended 1-0 in a grinder.

Tuesday, September 8

Playoff Race Update

  • It's down to two teams in the race for the Commissioner's cup-- Portland and Puerto Rico. Portland's magic number sits at 4.
  • Puerto Rico would have to win at least two of its remaining 3 games in order to have a chance at the top spot. Puerto Rico's remaining games are all on the road, at Minnesota, Carolina and Miami.
  • Six teams have now ensured themselves a spot in the playoffs, with the Impact clinching tonight after the Miami loss. Vancouver is playing to clinch the seventh and final spot on Wednesday.

POSTGAME: Keel Seals the Deal, Timbers Struggle Past Aztex

It was a happy Labor Day as the Timbers returned to their winning ways, pulling out a 1-0 victory against the Austin Aztex this afternoon at Nelson Field. In a rugged, sloppy match, and despite being outplayed for many stretches, the Timbers were able to find the back of the net in the 85th minute. Defender Stephen Keel was the hero tonight - a shot by Savage from the top of the box deflecting off Aztex keeper Gallardo, which then found its way to Keel, who nonchalantly kicked the ball into the corner of the goal. It's Keels first goal of the season. With the victory, the 1st place Timbers collect three more points in the standings, their magic number currently standing at 4. However, depending on the outcome of other games this week, Portland could possibly clinch the Commissioner's Cup and 1st place in the USL, as early as this Friday against the Aztex. Either way, it appears the Timbers will get a chance to take the Cup in front of their home crowd, as the team will finish the regular season with 3 matches at PGE Park.

With a few of their starters not making the road trip, Coach Wilkinson was forced to tinker with his rotation a bit, forward Jason Mclaughlin getting his third start on the year in place of the injured Mandjou Keita. The Timbers have not escaped this season without their share of injuries. Cameron Knowles, of course, out for the year and midfielder Johan Classeson still out with injury, although he's due to return shortly. With Keita nursing minor ailments and opting for rest instead of making the trip, the Timbers struggled at times to find cohesion offensively, clearly missing their leading goal-scorer. Although the shots were there - the Timbers firing 18 total for the game - the quality was not. Often times Portland had trouble keeping possession and many of their opportunities were wasted with shots going wide or clanging off the crossbar.

Still, in the 1st half the Timbers spent most of the match in the attacking third of the field, but in the 2nd half the Aztex would respond, outplaying Portland and generally looking sharper and more aggressive. Even though Austin only managed 6 shots on the game, they made the most of their strikes, nearly scoring on a few runs. Cronin was forced to make 4 saves on the game, all in the 2nd half. The defense came up big tonight. For the most part, they were able to mark up and shut down the Aztex forwards and gave Portland's offense plenty of opportunities to score. So, perhaps fittingly it was a defender that got us the game-winner.

Portland's depth was a factor again today. Taka, Nimo, and Forrest all came in and provided an important boost off the bench in the 2nd half. The Timber's deep rotation allows them to rest any weary legs and should serve them well heading into the playoffs. However, the fear could be that coasting into the postseason or perhaps taking our success for granted could come back to haunt the Timbers. Motivation and focus will be big keys as the team will need to stay aggressive to ensure they finish strong and lock-up 1st place. Portland has shown a slight tendency to play down to their competition, settling for a draw against Cleveland in their only meeting and struggling to pull out the win earlier in the season against the Aztex also. It will be a balancing act for Coach Wilkinson as he tries to rest legs, adjust playing rotations, and still get this team playing its best soccer down the stretch. The Timbers will return home Friday trying for a season sweep of the series with Austin and depending on pending results, could be trying for something quite a bit bigger as well.

Last drop - Attendance at the match was 2,439. It was pathetic. A ghost stadium. The far stands were completely empty. Literally, I don't think there was one person seated there, but I guess if your team sucked and your pitch looked like a football field...well, what else can you expect?

Look, Keel is so cool there is a rock band named after him.

Don't mess with these guys.

GAME PREVIEW: Labor Day In Austin

Portland Timbers

VS
Austin Aztex

4:00p @ Nelson Field
Monday, Sept. 7th
Online LIVE @ USLlive.com

The Timbers will be celebrating their Labor Day in Austin, TX this Monday, as the team heads out on the final road trip of the regular season. Coming off only their second loss on the year, the Timbers saw their 24 match unbeaten streak come to end at the hands of Rochester last Thursday. A regrouped and refocused Timbers squad should enter Nelson Field eager to put those disappointments behind them and will have to finish these last 4 games with their best effort. Currently, Portland is 1st place in the standings, but with only a 3 point lead over 2nd place Carolina, nothing is guaranteed yet. Essentially, it's still a 4-team race for this year's Commissioner's Cup, the winner earning a first round bye in the playoffs.

The first and only meeting between these two clubs was back in July, a 2-1 thriller at Nelson Field - Austin getting an equalizer in the 90th minute, but Tony Mcmanus answering with the game-winner moments before the final whistle. The Aztex have endured a tough season, 2nd to last in the standings, gathering an unimpressive record of 4-15-8. They've already played two matches this month, losing both. The Aztex have struggle offensively with only 25 goals on the year, but perhaps worse, they've given up nearly twice as many with 47. On paper, this game should be a cake-walk. However, playing a team twice in a row is never an easy challenge and could be a cause for some concern. The clubs will finish the season series on Friday at PGE park.

With Labor Day signaling the end of Summer, the Timbers' sights will begin to fall on the postseason. Portland will need to be playing their best soccer heading into the playoffs and fortunately for them, the next 4 games can serve as a nice tune-up. After their back-to-back with Austin, the Timbers will finish the season with two home games against Cleveland, currently last place in the league. Hopefully, this will allow Coach Wilkinson to rest any weary legs and help the club gather momentum by the end of the month when it counts the most. Some questions have arisen however - could there be a letdown after riding high for so long on the streak? And after a heartbreaking defeat, how will the Timbers respond? Well, I guess we do know what happened after their last loss.

Players to Watch
Miguel Gallardo - Austin's starting keeper returned to action on Saturday after being out several months with a broken leg. Apparently, Gallardo played quite well, making 5 saves in the match, despite his team's losing effort in Miami. Gallardo should be in net when the clubs take the field Monday.

Sullivan Silva - The Aztex play an aggressive brand of soccer with a majority of their shots coming from their forwards. With their leading goal scorer on the year Eddie Johnson gone, Silva will get his share of opportunities. The young Brazilian forward is not bashful, blasting 42 shots on goal this year. He's found the back of the net 3 times and has also recorded 2 assists.

Jean Alexandre - The Haitian forward has only played nine games for the Aztex, but has already put up 4 goals and an assist. In their loss to Vancouver last week, Alexandre scored the only two goals for the Aztex. Like the Timber's Alex Nimo, the young forward is young, inexperienced, and full of talent. The two are also teammates, both property of Real Salt Lake and currently on loan to the USL.

Last Drop
The Agency Sports Bar located off Burnside Downtown, is having a viewing event for the game on Monday. They'll be handing out prizes, souvenirs, and other junk. A few select Timber players will be there and of course, they've got beer and big screens as well. If you're interested here's more information. Everybody have a Happy Holiday and Go Timbers!

POSTGAME: The Streak Ends - A Blessing in Disguise?

What an amazing run. The Timbers would lose the season opener to Vancouver; then starting on April 30th, with a 0-0 draw against Carolina at PGE Park, the Timbers would go over 4 months without losing a USL regular season match. In 24 matches, Portland would post a record of 14-0-10, shattering the old unbeaten streak of 15 set by Miami in 2004. Regardless of what happens the rest of the year, the Timbers have etched their way into the history books and made the 2009 season one that will never be forgotten by their fans. Truly, we all witnessed something incredible.

So, the Timbers lost, something we haven't had to say all summer. The Rhinos played a very scrappy and determined game tonight to pull out the 2-1 victory. A very physical and aggressive first half, the game opened with a few player collisions and some heated confrontations. Mcmanus was in the middle of it, nothing surprising there. Things were competitive and chippy between he and former teammate Andrew Gregor, the two exchanging words after some physical play. Danso was also kicked in the head on multiple occasions, sacrificing his body to to defend the box. The effort was there by the defense tonight, unfortunately the ball just didn't bounce our way. You can't win them all.

Portland just couldn't keep possession of the ball and often times found themselves on their heels, running back to defend after a bad or broken up pass. It was a fast paced match, both teams sending long balls in the air, trying to press the action. Portland had their opportunities, earning 6 corners and a couple PK kicks, but again, it just didn't break their way. Rochester was a little sharper and more efficient. They ended up outshooting Portland 13-11, but the telling statistic is that Cronin had to make 5 saves, compared to Vallow's 1. Although the action was back-and-forth, the Rhinos had the more serious threats and better shots on target. Errol Mcfarlane was a terror, with 5 total attempts, scoring both goals, including the heartbreaking game winner in the 90th minute. It seemed like he and Menyongar were everywhere tonight.

However, there were many positives to take away from this loss. Rodrigo Lopez subbed in during the 2nd half and played quite well. He showed creativity and good instincts, setting guys up in open space with nice passes. Lopez was responsible for the cross into the box that eventually found its way to Pore, who blasted in the equalizer. I fully expect him to contribute the rest of the year. Also, Portland showed some real grit and resiliency, not giving up and fighting through some rugged play to bring the game back to even. They've had multiple come from behind victories this season and a few wins they've given up, but I think that never-say-die attitude will serve them well as things tighten up heading into the postseason. The Timbers are still in first place too - 3 points ahead of Carolina with 4 games left to play. Portland's Magic # remains at 6, meaning with two more wins they clinch the Commissioner's Cup. Attendance was also pretty good tonight. 11, 683 fans came out on a Thursday night, opting to miss or DVR the Ducks game instead. A positive sign for a growing fanbase. Just not the best night for local sports.

So how is this loss a blessing in disguise? With the streak over, now the Timbers can focus on finishing the year strong and head into the playoffs with nothing on their minds but a championship. The team will no longer have to carry around the weight of the streak on their shoulders, a burden that was growing with every passing match. If they had entered the postseason still unbeaten, the expectations and attention associated with the streak would simply be extra pressure that this team would have to bare. The loss is out of the way. Atleast the team can relax, perhaps play more freely, and set their sites on the real goal - winning a league title.

GAME PREVIEW: The Final Five - Can the Timbers Finish at 29 Unbeaten?

Portland Timbers

VS
Rochester Rhinos

7:00p @ PGE Park
Thursday, Sept. 3rd
Watch online @ USLlive.com

Things are getting awfully exciting as the Timbers enter the final month of the USL regular season in 1st place, clinging to a slim 3 point lead in the overall standings. 15 days and 5 games left to be played for the team that's riding the historic 24 match Unbeaten streak. The best part? 4 out of those 5 matches are played in the rowdy and supportive atmosphere of PGE Park. And 4 out of those 5 are played against bottom of the barrel, non-playoff teams (2 vs Cleveland, 2 vs Austin). At home, the Timbers have a 9-0-2 record, having scored 23 goals and only given up 4. So, it appears Portland is in good shape to finish the regular season on a 29 match unbeaten streak, their only USL loss - all year - coming against Vancouver in the opener.

Rochester will be coming into Portland looking to end the streak. Since getting blown out 4-1 at home earlier in the month, the Rhinos have battled their way to 3 draws. Although technically winless in their last 4 matches, this is a team that shouldn't be overlooked. Currently holding onto the final spot in the postseason, but fighting to move up for better positioning, the Rhinos will be a motivated club. The first meeting between these teams was one of the more memorable moments of the year, ending in dramatic fashion on a Ryan Pore penalty-kick goal in the 90th minute. The Timbers will sweep the season series with a victory today.

Defense will be in the spotlight again. The Rhinos like to run a quick and open game, pushing the action up the field to counter strike. They score goals, but give up quite a few as well. Portland will need strong efforts by Steve Cronin and Stephen Keel again, both players making the USL team of the week for their defensive play in the Charleston match. The jury is still out on Mamdou Danso; who hasn't played horribly, but has had some sloppy moments trying to fill in. Will they be able to smooth out some of those kinks before the playoffs? It will be interesting to see if our defense can stay tough during these last 12 days. With veteran-leader Cameron Knowles out, Coach Wilkinson must have some concerns over the depth of his backline, signing defender Ivan Becerra last week. Becerra and fellow newcomer Rodrigo Lopez could both see playing time over the final 5 matches, as Wilkinson might try to rest some legs before the postseason.

After a frustrating match played in the Charleston rain, the Timbers should be eager and aggressive to take the pitch against the Rhinos. Passion shouldn't be an issue today, but even though Rochester stands as the team's most challenging opponent remaining, focus and drive will still be the biggest keys to finishing this season. With everything going so well and Portland riding this long, euphoric wave of momentum, could the Timbers become over-confident? Will they slip up or overlook an easy opponent and actually lose a match? It will certainly be a mental challenge for this team to maintain it's intensity and finish the year playing their best soccer.

Players to Watch
Johnny Menyongar - He's been a scoring machine for the Rhinos with 9 goals on the season. A long time veteran of the USL, Menyongar has been putting up points for years, helping Minnesota win the league championship in 2003. You always have to keep an eye on him.

Tiger Fitzpatrick - The Rochester midfielder with the cool hair will be a key player in today's matchup. The midfield is where the game is won and Fitzpatrick's versatility, vision, and speed will have to be met head-on by guys like Mcmanus and Farber (Claesson is questionable with a concussion). Tiger has 2 goals and 5 assists on the year.

Warren Ukah - The young 24 yr old forward just signed with the Rhinos in July, leaving his last team, the Portland Timber's U-23 club. Ukah has played well since joining Rochester, scoring 3 goals and recording an assist as well. Look for him to force the issue - he's already blasted 17 shot attempts, but also has been blown for 14 fouls.

TIMBER BITS - Defense Recognized in USL Week 21 Honors

- Good to see the defense get some acknowledgement for their crucial effort against the Charleston Battery this week at Blackbaud Stadium. They had to battle the sloppy conditions, but Cronin was on his game and Keel had a multiple goal-saving tackles in the box. Both made the USL team of the week, the second time on season for each. Remember, the Timbers have the best defense in the league with 14 goals allowed on the year, only 4 of those given up at PGE park.

Two days later on Friday, August 28, Portland goalkeeper Steve Cronin made three saves while defender Stephen Keel played the full 90 minutes and held the Battery to five shots to push Portland’s unbeaten streak to 24 games in the
formidable environment of Charleston’s Blackbaud stadium. On the other side of the ball, Charleston midfielder Scott Buete was the top player for the third place Battery.

- Over on PortlandTimbers.com they have their "Man of the Month" award going on. For August five Timbers are nominated for the honor and it's a tough decision, which isn't surprising - usually a lot of stuff is going right when your team hasn't lost a match.

Cronin captured all five wins for the Timbers during the month of August,
adding to his league-leading totals in that category. Last month, he collected
25 saves, recorded three shutouts and limited opponents to just four goals in
seven matches.

Keel contributed in all three of the Timbers’
shutouts in August and was a part of the team’s backline that posted a 0.57
goals-against average during the month. He started all seven matches and played
every minute of those contests.

Pore scored six goals during the
month of August – one in each of the first six games to set a new
modern-franchise record for goals scored in consecutive matches. Among his six
strikes, two were game-winners. He was named to the Team of the Week twice last
month.

Savage also played in all seven games on the Timbers’ August
schedule, including five starts. He totaled one goal and two assists. Savage’s
goal helped the Timbers record their first-ever win on the road over the
Rochester Rhinos on Aug. 15.

Keita totaled four goals and four
assists last month, earning USL First Division Team of the Week honors in three
straight weeks – Week 18, 19, 20. Two of his goals came in a 3-1 win over the
Miami FC Blues; it was the second time this season he recorded multiple goals in
a single game.

- If you have the time, check out what Oregonlive.com community blogger Kip has to say when comparing this 2009 Timbers team to the 2007 team that finished 2nd in the regular season and made a nice run into the semifinals during the playoffs. Although on the longer side, his anecdotes and commentary are often insightful.

What this team has is balance, as 16 different players have tallied a point for the Timbers for either a goal or an assist, while 13 of them have scored at
least one goal. If teams focus on Keita, they run the risk of Josten, Pore, or
Farber scoring, while focusing on the midfielders allows Keita, Josten, and recent signee Kevin Forrest to roam free up top. The team also has depth in all positions, which means Wilkinson can keep his guys fresh for the remaining weeks of the season. It's this combination of speed and skill that I feel the 2007 Timbers were lacking and what makes this 2009 version that much more dangerous.

- Over at the RhinosZone, a useless Rochester Rhino's fan site, they'll probably be starting a pre-game discussion thread soon about the upcoming game this Thursday. They talked some trash earlier in the month when the clubs met, many there predicting they would end the streak. We beat them 4-1. So, check their forum out if you want a good laugh and it's not looked down upon to harass them a bit too. Go get em'!

- One Last Drop: Here's a big deal - Saturday, Sept. 5th, Mamadou Danso and David Hayes will be signing autographs and hanging out over at the Beaverton Best Buy from 1-2 pm. As if Best Buy wasn't cool enough. That's obviously the place to be this weekend; you think I'm joking.
