Welcome to Poreland!!! Timbers Now Stand Alone In First Place

Ryan Pore celebrates after scoring the game winner Thursday night.

In an early season showdown for first place, the Portland Timbers defeated the Vancouver Whitecaps 2-1 behind two breathtaking goals by midfielder Ryan Pore. Portland not only takes a 3-point lead in the overall USSF standings, but also lands the first punch in this years Cascadia Cup Derby. As expected for a rivalry game, play on the field was intense and emotionally charged right from the opening kickoff - both teams exchanging their best shots.

Portland would strike first. In the 7th minute, forward OJ Obatola would take a kick to the head leaping for a loose ball, drawing a foul a few yards outside the Vancouver box. Pore would then line-up to take the free kick, bending a brilliant shot around a wall of Whitecap defenders, finding the top-left shelf for a goal. The 5,808 in attendance at PGE Park erupted. An amazing shot. Not only was the shot Pore's 5th goal of the season, but it was the first goal of the year scored against Whitecap's keeper Jay Nolly.

However, the celebration would be short lived. Vancouver's pressure was effective early, earning them 5 corners in the 1st half and 10 overall for the game. The Whitecaps would nearly score in the opening minutes, a header off a their first corner cross that would clang off the far post. Throughout the 1st half, Portland would find difficulties organizing and locking down to defend Vancouver's well-executed set pieces. And in the 11th minute, the Whitecaps would capitalize off their 3rd corner attempt, when team captain Martin Nash would send a ball over the middle that defender Nelson Akwari would take out the air, blasting a head shot past keeper Steve Cronin. By the end of the 1st half, Vancouver seemingly had Portland on their heels. Although they would find their opportunities, Portland's play early was rushed and a bit sloppy. It seemed that the team was pressing, often carelessly opting for the long ball, instead of waiting for a more patient play.

"It takes time to settle into a rhythm." said Head Coach Gavin Wilkinson. "We're only 4 games into the season and what I've told the players is that it's important to work out and earn respect from the opposition. We can't go into games expecting to play our best early on.... We have to work our way into games. We can't look to go and start playing immediately. So it's a matter of taking our time."

"We came out a little sluggish." said Pore. "You know, credit our back-four because Marlon (James) and (Marcus) Haber are a handful up top and Nash plays great balls in behind, so we were fortunate to be tied 1-1 going into halftime, but I thought we regrouped a bit and put it together a little better in the 2nd half."

A high-paced and passionate match with physical play coming from both sides, perhaps it was only inevitable that tensions would run high and eventually erupt on the field. 7 yellow cards, a red card, and a healthy dose of fouls were handed out by last-minute replacement referee Desmond Miller, who was perhaps slightly in over his head. Apparently, Miller had most recently been officiating local high school soccer. The yellow-card happy referee gave Portland 5 cautions, many of which seemed overblown, misjudged, or undeserving. For instance, a 42nd minute yellow handed to Quavas Kirk for making a play on the ball that tripped Nash to the ground, certainly deserving of a foul, but pulling out the yellow card seemed unnecessary. The exact same thing could be said for Rodrigo Lopez's yellow card later in the 2nd half.

The official's attempts to gain control of the game were for naught, as emotions would finally spill over on the field. Vancouver would start the 2nd half focused and playing very aggressive soccer, earning back-to-back corners in the early minutes. Then in the 65th minute, Caps forward Johnny Steele would receive a long ball over the top as he raced towards the goal, only to be fouled from behind by defender Stephen Keel. Although it appeared that Keel may have poked the ball away cleanly (the linesman didn't make the call, the referee positioned behind the play blew his whistle and late), perhaps Steele took offense to the hard challenge, as he jumped up from the ground, rushing at Keel to give him a hard shove. Teammates from both teams would swarm in, as heated words and a few more shoves were tossed around.

"Everyone got a little fired up. Words were exchanged, pushes were exchanged." said Keel. "And from there I think we got a little spark."

Eventually, the players were separated and Nash would take the free kick, looping a shot out of Cronin's reach that would deflect off the post, just inches wide of a goal. Another close call and certainly, the game didn't seem to be going Portland's way.

"We have to deal with it and play through." said Kirk. "....You're not always gonna get all the calls."

The final straw would come in the 84th minute. Mamadou Danso called for his 2nd yellow of the day was thus given a red card and ejected from the game. The Timbers and their fans would holler in protest. A poor judgment call by the official. The play was relatively harmless and certainly not malicious - Futty with a bump and kick at the ball on a Vancouver player as he dribbled away from the goal outside the Timber's box. Regardless, Danso was sent off to the locker room and the Timbers would be forced to play a man down for the last 8 minutes of the match.

"The calls weren't going our way tonight." said Pore. "But we hung in there and were able to get a result."

After some key substitutions by Coach Wilkinson, the Timbers began to turn the game around. Scot Thompson, Rodrigo Lopez, Doug DeMartin, and Steve Purdy would make key contribution off the bench in the 2nd half, helping to settle down Portland's offense as well as slow down the Vancouver attack.

"Maybe the experience of Scot helped us settle down a little bit, his distribution was very good." said Coach Wilkinson. "Bringing in Doug DeMartin was tremendous and added a lot of movement and we were able to keep the ball for longer periods and not become predictable."

The Timbers would valiantly fight back. With their intensity level rising and their pressure becoming increasingly relentless, the Timbers owned the final 30 minutes of the game. More patient play and better control of possession on offense would lead to a series of threatening opportunities, many leading to shots and near goals. One big play, a 72nd minute breakaway run by DeMartin from a nice chip pass by forward George Josten, would end as DeMartin was tripped and tugged from behind, his off-balance shot saved by a charging Jay Nolly.

Then it happened. 86th minute. Midfielder James Marcelin launches a high arching ball across the field towards a small cluster of players in the Whitecap's box. The players look up to the sky, jostling for position as the ball makes its descent. Ryan Pore makes his move, flying over the shoulders of the Vancouver defenders, and crushing the ball with a snap of his head. A rocket of a shot, the ball soars past Nolly for a goal. Game winner. Pore runs and leaps into the stands. The team storms in celebration. PGE Park goes nuts.

Pore has now scored 6 goals in 4 games. Currently, he leads the league in goals scored as well as total points with 11. Out of the Timbers 7 goals this season, Pore has been involved in all of them. I'd say it's fair to ask, is there anybody playing better soccer in the USSF right now?

The Timbers remain undefeated on the year (3-0-1) and are gradually finding their chemistry as things continue to come together on the field. Portland displayed some of the traits that make them a championship contending club - determination, talent, unselfishness, and most importantly depth. In a grueling 30 game season, depth is major advantage and should only be a benefit as time wears on.

"We've gone with some players that have been tremendous for us." said Coach Wilkinson. "And now there's a little bit more pressure on those (guys) from the players that have come in and played well."

Four subs played over 20 minutes for the Timbers and by the end of the match you could see their depth paying dividends, as the Whitecaps seemed unable to match Portland's energy level. A gutsy and tough performance against the team that knocked the Timbers out of the playoffs last year and a game that should be remembered for a long time. Despite things not going their way, Portland was able to fight through adversity and still find a way to pull out the victory.

"Overall, you look at the big picture, it's 3 points against one of the better teams in the league and we'll take the 3 points." said Keel. "Did we play our best soccer? No, I don't think so. I think anyone will tell you that. But it's early in the season and in a positive way, we're getting results, but not playing our best soccer, so its something to build on looking forward."

"The work ethic was good tonight, the mentality. I don't think we were as clinical as we could have been." said Coach Wilkinson. "We could have been a lot better in possession, we should have created more chances, and should have gotten more numbers forward. But in saying that, the way we came back and the way we won the game was tremendous, so I'll take my hat off to the boys."

Notes

1

Los Angeles Galaxy

-

T 0 - 0 @ KCW

No goal for Buddle meant no goals for the Galaxy. Should US Nats worry that Donovan hasn't scored yet? Both will get plenty of chances against LA.

2

Columbus Crew

-

W 1 - 0 v RSL

Willed themselves to victory by scoring on only shot on goal, a Schelloto PK. Hesmer was MoM with save after save in last ten minutes. Columbus travels to the Seattle this week.

3

Colorado Rapids

+6

w 2 - 1 @ NER

Big jump up rankings due mostly to being only road team to get a win. Two long-range strikes get the Rapids a solid victory. Another road at Quakes awaits them next week.

4

Red Bull New York

-

W 2 - 1 v PHL

Another Angel PK leads to another win for surprisingly effective Red Bulls. Loads of empty seats at RB Arena must be a disappointment. Should get a road win at DC.

5

Seattle Sounders

-2

T 2 - 2 @ DAL, L 0 - 2 @ TFC

Two games on the road is always tough, but they will have wanted more than one point from their games at Dallas and Toronto. Host Crew this week in the "Coach Sigi" Cup.

6

Chicago Fire

+2

W 2 - 0 v HOU

Two goal lead never looked fully secure, but the Fire get the shutout anyway. Still waiting on first Collins John goal. Rebounding Chivas come to town next.

7

Real Salt Lake

-2

L 0 - 1 @ CMB

Real continues to slide down rankings with a tough road loss in a very rainy Columbus. Get a very winnable game (hosting TFC) after brutal one-two punch versus LA & at Crew.

8

Houston Dynamo

-2

L 0 - 2 @ CHI

Tough luck not to score against a stout Chicago defense. Landin must take a bigger role or they will need to look elsewhere. At home against undefeated KC this week.

9

New England Revolution

-2

L 1 - 2 v COL

The Revolution were the only home team to lose - desperately seeking help without stars, Joseph and Twellman. Get another chance to win at home versus unpredictable FCD.

10

Kansas City Wizards

-

T 0 - 0 v LAG

Worst miss in MLS history comes back to haunt Wizards - but KC is the first team to take points from LA. Wizards will want to stay undefeated by going to Houston this week.

11

Toronto

+1

W 2 - 0 v SEA

DeRo with a goal and assist in very good win at home against Sounders. Is any team more reliant on one player? This week they have a tough road game at defending champs.

12

San Jose Earthquakes

-1

L 2 - 3 @ CHV

Fought to the end in loss at Chivas; probably deserved a point for effort. The need to be aware of Colorado's visit as the Rapids won at New England last week.

13

Chivas USA

+2

W 3 - 2 v SJE

Sasha Kljesten welcome back to the MLS. He finally mad an impact and played well throughout their win. They need another total effort on their trip to the Windy City.

14

Dallas

-1

T 2 - 2 v SEA

Another last gasp goal to get the draw at home. Two goals from Cunningham, not too exciting as both were from the spot. Now it's off to New England to attempt first victory.

15

Philidelphia Union

-1

L 1 - 2 @ RBNY

Moreno and Le Toux are getting it figured out up front and defenders avoided getting sent off - both are massive improvements. Could get VERY ugly at Galaxy next week.

16

DC United

-

DNP

DC United host the Red Bulls… what a difference a year makes. DC is this year's version of the 2009 Red Bulls.

Stadium Construction Around the MLS

The MLS currently has four stadiums that are in the process of being built, or in the Timbers case renovated. The projects will go a long way in furthering the effort by the MLS to put all its teams in soccer specific stadiums. Philly's new stadium will open this June 27th when they face the flounders in the stadium's grand opening.

Cascadia Cup Preview - A Battle for 1st Place this Thursday

Portland Timbers

VS

Vancouver Whitecaps

7pm @ PGE Park
Thursday April 29th
Online @ PortlandTimbers.com
Radio on 95.5 The Game
TV on FSN

The 2010 Cascadia Cup begins on Thursday, as the Vancouver Whitecaps must make their first trip inside the confines of PGE Park this season to face the Portland Timbers and their army of rabid supporters. Thursday's contest will mark the first of four meetings between the Timbers and the Whitecaps this season, essentially a four game series for the right to be called the best soccer team in the Northwest. This will be the 7th time the 2-foot tall silver Cup will be contested for and will also be the 2nd year in a row that the Seattle Sounders will not be apart of the competition. Traditionally, the Cascadia Cup has been an ongoing tournament between the Portland Timbers, the Vancouver Whitecaps, and the Seattle Sounders, the championship awarded annually to the team that finishes with the best record after all the regular season matches between the teams are played. Last season, as a result of the Sounders moving to the MLS, the Cascadia Cup was played for by only the Timbers and the Whitecaps, with the Timbers winning 2 out of the 3 match-ups and capturing their first-ever Cascadia Cup Championship. However, it was the Whitecaps who eliminated Portland from the playoffs later that year, so be ready for a spirited contest and a revenge-filled atmosphere when these two heated rivals finally kick off again. You can go here if you'd like a more thorough history of the Cascadia Cup.

Thursday will also be a meeting between the two teams that are currently tied for 1st place in the USSF Division-2 Po League. Both the Timbers and the Whitecaps have totaled 7 points by earning records of 2-0-1 so far this season, as the Timbers sit atop of the USL division and the Caps are leading their respective NASL division. Portland is coming off a disappointing 1-1 draw against Montreal this past Sunday, in which a controversial foul called on Quavas Kirk resulted in a late-game penalty kick for the Impact.

The key for Portland will be scoring goals. Offensively, the Timbers have struggled at times, execution and consistency hasn't been perfect, and the team could really use some more production out of their forwards. So far, they've been too reliant on midfielder Ryan Pore, someone else needs to step up soon. Finishing in the final third will have to improve. Eventually, if they don't show better offensive cohesiveness, it's going to come back to bite them. The worst news? Vancouver has yet to give up a goal in 3 games played this year.

Although, Vancouver reached the league finals last year, eventually losing to the reigning champion Montreal Impact, head coach Teitur Thordarson and the Caps management still decided to make significant changes to their roster in the off-season. In a similar position to Portland, with both teams existing as MLS scouting stations, the Whitecaps are heavy on new talent, but are still searching to improve their overall chemistry. Fortunately, returning keeper Jay Nolly has provided a steady and reliable influence. As the team's 2009 MVP, Nolly played in every minute of every game for Vancouver last season and so far, nothing has changed this year. Still, Vancouver's solid defensive play has been somewhat surprising considering the handful of new additions to their backline. New starting defenders Nelson Akwari and Greg Janicki both bring MLS experience with them and have filled in smoothly thus far. On the other side of the ball things haven't been as accomplished for Vancouver. With leading scorer Charles Gbeke gone, the burden of offense has fallen to injury prone forward Marlon James, who has only 1 goal so far this year and overall, the Whitecaps have only scored 3 goals in 3 games. So, don't be surprised to see a grinding, defensive battle on Thursday. The team that can make the least amount of errors, display some clutch play, and capitalize on their offensive opportunities should be able to pull out the victory.

Players to Watch
Jay Nolly - Vancouver's excellent goal keeper already has 9 saves to go along with his 3 shutouts. The Timbers will have to really apply the pressure to get a goal past Nolly on Thursday.

Martin Nash - Nash stands as one of the few returning veterans from Vancouver's 2009 squad. The midfielder is the younger brother of NBA star Steve Nash and has played with the team since 2004.

Marcus Haber - The 21-year old forward already has a wealth of experience at such a young age. A promising local prospect from Vancouver BC, Haber fired 3 shots on goal last match. Could be a wild card.

Extra Notes:
Vancouver defender Mouloud Akloul scored the game-winner in the Whitecaps 1-0 victory against AC St Louis on Saturday, then he fractured his ankle. Akloul underwent successful surgery this week and is now expected to be out 4 months. Tough luck........ The Blazers will play an elimination playoff game on Thursday, once again conflicting with the Timbers scheduling. How is this going to effect attendance? Unfortunately, I'd only expect around 5,000 again.

Dropping Timber Match Ratings

April 25th vs Montreal Impact
Ratings are on a scale of 1 to 10. 10 being an absolutely amazing game and 1 meaning you could barely kick the ball. It's all very scientific. One interesting thing about soccer is you can't simply check a box score and see how a player, lets say a defensive player, performed that game. So, match ratings are simply another way to try and assess value to a player, their performance, and their contribution to the team.

Eventually, I think it would be useful if we could create a more defined rating scale. For instance, should Pore get a 10 rating for his game against AC St Louis? He had 2 goals, 1 assist, and that's an awesome game, but what about if Pore pulled a Messi and scored 4 goals in a game? You have to leave room in the ratings scale for possibly bigger performances, right? Also, what if a player subs in and only plays like 3 minutes? They probably didn't do much out there, so should they get a 1 rating? or is 5-6 a good "standard" score? What do you guys think? Give us your input in the comments section or in the forums and maybe we can all come together over time and produce some type of standard rating scale.

Also, thanks so much to everyone who's contributed their match ratings to the data base. The more people who supply ratings the cooler the stats will be, you know, the more the better basically. So, feel free to give your opinion of how each Timber played and rate the players here. Okay, on to the ratings...

-Starters-

Ryan Pore

Pore has scored or assisted on every goal for the Timbers so far this year. Pore is absolutely carrying this team. Where would we be without him?
Dropping Timber Rating: 8

"So far, the heart of the Timbers (on offense)" -Greener99
Community Rating: 8.9

Steve Purdy
Made a couple big saves, including a yellow card just outside the box that may have prevented a goal. I'd expect to see more of Purdy throughout the season. Oh, and that header was purdy sweet too.
Dropping Timber Rating: 8

"Should've had a goal, and made some great tackles when needed. Even the Yellow card was a smart play." -Greener99
Community Rating: 8.4

Steve Cronin
Had another good performance, should have gotten the shutout.
Dropping Timber Rating: 8

"1 save, defense did great again so not much required. unfortunately couldn't stop the PK, can't really blame him though" -DanP
Community Rating: 8.9

Brian Farber
Farber has played solid all year. Brings a ton of energy and creates opportunities with his speed and passing.
Dropping Timber Rating: 8

"Does what he's asked to do, as always." -Greener99
Community Rating: 7.3

Mamdou Danso
Futty does a great job of using his athleticism to win jump balls and contest plays in the air. He and Purdy completely clogged up the middle against Montreal.
Dropping Timber Rating: 7.5
Community Rating: 7.83

Ian Joy
Steady, solid performace. Good to see the Man with the Band back on the pitch.
Dropping Timber Rating: 7.5
Community Rating: 7.5

Quavas Kirk
Unfortunately, you have to penalize him for the foul on Brown. Maybe it wasn't the right call, but he still has to shoulder some of the blame for giving Brown the opportunity to flop. Besides that, thought Kirk played a nice game and shows a lot of promise with his speed, aggression, and physical abilities.
Dropping Timber Rating: 7

"Hands off in the area, especially, on the road." - Greener99
Community Rating: 6.5

George Josten
Should have had at least 1 goal, probably 2. Could have 1-timed the pass from Farber to get a shot off in the 15th and the other one simply should have been in the back of the net. Still, did a nice job finding space and putting pressure on Montreal's defense, just gotta work on the last bit.
Dropping Timber Rating: 7

"Must learn to finish better." - PtownPimp
Community Rating: 6.3

James Marcelin
An improvement from last week. Still a little rough around the edges, but looks to be getting more comfortable with everyone out there, even fired 2 shots against the Impact.
Dropping Timber Rating: 7

"Turned the ball over WAY too many time in our third" - Greener99
Community Rating: 7

Johan Claesson
Had an un-Claesson like game. Looked a step slow out there and his passing wasn't sharp.
Dropping Timber Rating: 6.5

OJ Obatola
OJ didn't do it. Had a very quiet game. Just didn't create any opportunities for himself or anyone else and on top of that had a handful of blunders, such as ugly turnovers.
Dropping Timber Rating: 6

"Does he have trouble finding the ball? Beginning to get harder to blame this on the midfield" - Greener 99
Community Rating: 6.7

-SUBS-
Doug DeMartin
Played okay, but did record his first assist as a Timber, even if Pore weaved through 3-4 four defenders after he caught the pass. Still, way to go Doug.
Dropping Timber Rating: 6.5
Community Rating: 7.38

Tony McManus
Would have liked to seen him get more playing time, but the rotation is going to be tough and tight all year.
Dropping Timber Rating: 6
Community Rating: 7.25

Rodrigo Lopez
Timbers are very deep across the middle and Lopez is another nice young prospect. Had that beautiful cross off the free kick late in the game.
Dropping Timber Rating: 6.5
Community Rating: 6.75

Stephen Keel
Dropping Timber Rating: 6
Community Rating: 7.25

Taka Suzuki

Breakdance on the Deck

The great ones dance with the ball, and Barcelona's Jeffren Suarez has some great moves. My favorite part of this goal is the announcer's breakdown of the play.

How Could You Miss That?

The Timbers have had their share of missed goal scoring opportunities this season, but they were nothing compared to the miss by the Wizard's Kei Kamara.

POSTGAME: Timbers Leave Montreal With 1 - 1 Draw

'

For their first road trip of the season, the Portland Timbers will have to settle for a 1 - 1 draw, as a controversial late foul whistled on defender Quavas Kirk resulted in a PK kick and ultimately the game-tying 80th minute goal by Montreal. The Timbers seemed to be on their way to 1-0 victory, taking the lead on a goal by Ryan Pore in the 67th minute. However, late in the game when Impact forward Roberto Brown tried to cut through the box, he became tangled in the arms of Kirk, and quickly dropped to the ground drawing the call from referee John Oliva. Impact team captain Nievo Pizzolitto then calmly stepped up and blasted a low, skimming PK shot past keeper Steve Cronin.

Although earning a draw against the defending league champions is far from a disappointing outcome, especially on the road. The Timbers still allowed the opportunity to gain 3 points in the standings slip through their fingers and that will surely sting a bit. The question is did the they allow the victory to escape them or did they have it taken away? It's always tough to have a call go against your team late in a match and although Kirk unquestionably placed his hands on Brown, the contact appeared minimal and Brown's fall was likely exaggerated. Still, Portland remains unbeaten on the year with a record of 2-0-1.

Certainly, the Timbers played well enough to leave with a win. Perhaps playing their best game of the year, Portland was patient and efficient offensively, passing the ball well and creating open spaces on the field. Defensively, the entire team was solid as well, aggressively breaking up runs, collectively shutting out Montreal for most of the match, and holding them to only 2 shots in the 1st half. The backline saw a boost with the return of team captain, Ian Joy, who provided some steady play. Defenders Steve Purdy and Mamdou Danso did a great job starting in the center back positions, clogging up the middle and routinely making key tackles. Purdy had multiple goal saving plays on the afternoon and nearly had a goal of his own around the 50th minute, on a header shot off a corner kick that was stopped by the face of Impact midfielder Leonardo Di Lorenzo. Quavas Kirk also impressed again with his athleticism and well-rounded skill set, his presence felt on both sides of the field, one moment tracking back to make a tackle and then turning around to help initiate a run on the other end.

The Timbers will regret not being able to convert on some golden opportunities. Portland applied a lot of pressure early, nearly scoring on a handful of plays, including a chance in front of the net around the 15th minute for forward George Josten that was broken up before a shot could be fired. As the half drew to a close, Montreal would begin to settle down as Portland grew a bit impatient and the match would remain scoreless heading into the locker room.

The Timbers continued playing solid soccer in the 2nd half, making good first touches and playing unselfishly, eventually leading to a breathtaking run by Pore, who took a pass from Doug DeMartin and weaved his way through a handful of Impact defenders to put the ball past keeper Matt Jordan. Pore has now struck for 4 goals on the season and 1 assist, meaning he's been involved in every score for the team this year. The Timbers would find other chances. In the 74th minute, forward George Josten failed to convert, when another nice run through the middle by Pore found Brian Farber cutting to the corner, who then put a perfect cross in place to Josten. Josten would have an open window for the shot, but missed wide. Portland would bring in a slew of subs near the end of the match to try and pull out the win, their best chance perhaps coming in extra time on a free kick taken by Rodrigo Lopez, that crossed across the box, but couldn't find a home.

Portland was out shot by Montreal 7-6 and the Impact also took 5 corners overall to the Timbers 3. Also, although a fairly physical match with 26 fouls called and 8 cautions, I was impressed by Montreal's class on the field. Even on roughly contested plays and in situations when things could have become heated, Montreal stayed cool, opting for handshakes instead of, you know........ well, lets just say nobody got choked today. The Timbers will now play 4 consecutive games at home, with 5 out of their next 6 games at PGE, as well as a friendly on May 1st against Puntarenas FC - a great chance for them to take control of the USSF league standings. Currently with 7 points, Portland is tied for 1st place with long-time rivals the Vancouver Whitecaps. And Portland's next game? This Thursday, at PGE Park, against Vancouver.

Extra notes: Mandjou Keita was out of the line-up again for Portland. Word around is that he's having some travel issues, but hopefully will get them resolved soon.... Doug DeMartin recorded his first official assist as a professional and as a member of the Portland Timbers, subbing into the game around the 60th minute for OJ Obatola...... Referee John Oliva certainly became yellow card happy today, handing out 4 cautions to each team and an almost astounding 6 yellows given in the 2nd half alone..... Attendance was taken at 13,034 in Saputo Stadium, solid numbers for Montreal's home opener.....

GAME PREVIEW: Timbers to Play Defending Champions on Sunday

Portland Timbers

The Timbers embark on their first road trip of the regular season, as they head northward to Montreal for a Sunday afternoon showdown against the defending USL champions.

L'Impact will pose as a serious early test for the Timbers (2-0-0) who remain undefeated on the young season. Portland is coming off two victories at PGE Park, but still has room for improvement as the team continues to familiarize itself with all its new parts. With Coach Gavin Wilkinson returning to the sidelines, literally, minutes before kickoff against St Louis, and a handful of other players recently returning from injury, the Timbers are still scrambling to hit their full stride. The team has experienced some early season jitters, involving moments of sloppy play and complacency in small stretches, but nothing that raises any major concern. The team also expects to see the return of 2009 point leader Mandjou Keita to the lineup, which should provide a nice boost to the offense on Sunday.

Keys to a Portland victory will revolve around their cohesion offensively. They'll have to take care of the ball, maintain possession, and show patience in their attack. Last season, the Timbers found success against Montreal in their two regular season meetings, beating the Impact 4-0 at home and 1-0 at Stade Saputo Stadium. And much like last season, intensity level will again be a major focus. With Sunday being their home opener, Montreal will likely start the game with an emotional lift, so Portland will need to come out and match the Impact's aggression and raised intensity level. Montreal (0-1-0) will also be looking to bounce back from their regular season opener, a 2-0 loss to the Austin Aztecs down in Texas, in which their play was reportedly less than stellar.

Montreal was the "team that choked" in 2009 (the infamous on-field incident pictured above), although ironically enough they were incredibly clutch in the playoffs, overcoming a mediocre regular season (finishing 5th overall) to sweep through the postseason on their way to the franchise's 3rd league championship. Montreal returns almost their entire championship winning club, their only major loss, midfielder Joey Gjersten, who's been replaced by solid, international talent in Filipe Soares and Philippe Billy. Pushing hard for a MLS bid in 2012, the Impact possess a roster stocked full of talent. They're a very balanced team, good in all areas, and very dangerous when they're clicking and completely focused. Expectations are astronomical in Montreal, anything less than another championship would be viewed as a disappointment by the fans. And when it's all said and done, they might indeed be the last team standing when all the dust settles again.

* It should also be noted, to be fair, that the players involved in the choking altercation (Sandro Grande and Mauro Biello) are no longer with the team this season.

Players to Watch
Roberto Brown - The 32-year old forward from Panama City, returns for his 4th season with L'Impact. Roberto has scored 15 goals in 59 career games, leading the club with 7 goals in 2009, and 2 goals in the postseason. Had the final and essentially championship winning goal against Vancouver in 2009.

Tyler Hemming - A Canadian product currently involved with their national team system, Hemming is young prospect with a lot of potential in his 1st year with Montreal. Started and played 57 minutes in their season opener versus Austin.

Rocco Placentino - Rocco is an aggressive and offensive minded player out of the midfield. The 28-year old Canadian had 33 shot attempts in 27 appearances last season and also lead them with 3 shots last week.

Dropping Timber Match Ratings

April 22nd vs AC St Louis
Ratings are on a scale of 1 to 10. 10 being an absolutely amazing game and 1 meaning you could barely kick the ball. It's all very scientific.
One interesting thing about soccer is you can't simply check a box score and see how a player, lets say a defensive player, performed that game. So, match ratings are simply another way to try and assess value to a player, their performance, and their contribution to the team.

You can rate the players too, if you want. Give us your own match ratings here. Every week you can rate the players and tell us how you thought they performed, if you want to. Then we'll do some neat data stuff, like show you each players average match rating throughout the season. Okay, on to the ratings in order of most awesome.....

Ryan Pore - 8.5
Pore is having a great start to the season, 3 goals, 1
ast so far. Such a threat whenever he touches the ball, really carrying the load offensively for the Timbers right now.

OJ Obatola - 8
What a difference from game one. Seemed much more active and aggressive, had some really nice touches out there and the nice left-footed goal, also recorded his first official assist.

Brian Farber - 8
Farber was all over the place against St Louis. Defensively he causes so much disruption with his tireless pace and on the offensive side really used his speed to get the defense on its heels.

Steve Cronin - 8
Solid game by Cronin. Got caught a couple times, but fortunately still escaped with the shutout.

George Josten - 8
George really made the most of his first start of the season. Josten played unselfishly, not only assisted on Pore's 2nd goal, but also gave the initial pass leading to the game's opening score. If he keeps it up it'll be tough to take him out of the starting lineup.

Stephen Keel - 8
Watching Keel communicate with the rest of the team is fun.

James Marcelin - 7.5
James played better. Broke up a lot plays and played some physical defense, definitely does a good job using his size to clog up the middle.

Steve Purdy - 7.5
Seemed pretty comfortable out there. Had a couple big break ups and almost scored a goal, nice to know there's a player like him available in the rotation.

Quavas Kirk - 7.5
Like Kirk's well-rounded game. Plays physical aggressive defense and shows a willingness to mix it up on the offensive end. Had a couple really nice saves, including the diving header late.

Scot Thompson - 7
A smart, efficient game by the Timber veteran, didn't try to do too much or play out of his means. Good to see him back on the field, will help to add stability to our backline.

Tony McManus - 7
Played his normal, hectic, style against AC St Louis and has the 4 fouls to show for it. Also had the incredible goal-saving deflection in the 1st half.

Taka Sazuki - 6.5
Great to see Taka back on the field. He's getting old and his playing time could be limited this year, but still managed to fire 2 shots in under 20 minutes.

Alex Nimo - 6.5
Created some nice opportunities while he was out there, had a chance to score late in garbage time, always seems to make the most of his PT.

Matt Pyzdrowski - 6
Shared the shutout with Cronin, but didn't record any saves.

Josh Cameron - 6
Josh adds quality depth to our midfield, logged 17 minutes.

Bright Dike - 6
20 minutes in the 2nd half, first regular season action as a Timber.

Fantasy Standings Update

The Fantasy Contest Standings have been updated.  We've got a five way tie for first place.  Having Pore on your team is critical at this point, but I'm thinking when Keita comes back into the lineup, it's going to shake up the standings.  The Vancouver game on the 29th will be the first chance to earn some bonus Cascadia Cup points.

POSTGAME: Timbers Blowout AC St Louis 3 - 0

'

The Portland Timbers (2-0-0) continued their winning ways Thursday night with a 3 - 0 victory over league newcomers AC St. Louis in what was the first ever meeting between the two franchises. In front of a modest crowd of 5,893 at PGE Park, Portland put on a dominant performance against the first-year expansion team, earning their second shutout in as many games. After experiencing some out-of-sync moments in their season opener, the Timbers had an offensive explosion in their second match, erupting for 3 goals, 3 corners, and 12 total shot attempts. Often the fear of playing "down to your competition level" can be a concern when facing a newly constructed club such as St Louis. Therefore heading into the game, it was important for the Timbers to maintain their intensity level, to not overlook their opponent, and to really try to get off to a quick start. So, that's exactly what the Timbers did.

Only 17 seconds after kickoff, the Timbers would strike. After some nifty passing, the team found OJ Obatola in front of the box, who deftly drew in the St Louis keeper before dropping off an assist to a streaking Ryan Pore, who blasted in the goal from the left side.

"We wanted to get on them early." said Pore. "And that's exactly what we did. We weren't happy about our performance on Saturday, and we wanted to (come out and play better), fortunately, we were able to do that tonight."

Some of AC St Louis' best opportunities would come in the first half. Perhaps their most threatening scoring chance resulted from a crossing corner in the 30th minute, which was aggressively headed towards an open net by a St Louis midfielder, only to be deflected away at the last moment by a diving Tony McManus. Keeper Steve Cronin earned his second shutout of the year, sharing the honor with sub Matt Pyzdrowski, who saw his first action of the season. Overall, the Timbers were absolutely suffocating defensively, really clogging up the passing lanes, and rarely allowing St Louis anything promising in the final third of the field.

Said Cronin on the performance of the backline, "It was solid. Any problems they gave us, I think we put that on ourselves. But for the most part, we were pretty solid tonight."

Team captian Ian Joy was sidelined with an injury this evening - the word on Joy is that the injury is nothing serious and he's basically considered day-to-day. However, the defense was given a boost tonight by the return of 7 year Timber veteran Scot Thompson. Thompson was inserted into the starting lineup and along with defender Steve Purdy (who made his Timbers regular season debut), helped to offset the loss of Joy.

"It felt great." said Thompson, who is the longest tenured member on the Timbers roster. "It's always fun to get back on the field. Whenever I can play, whether it's 5 minutes or 10 minutes, it's great."

The Timbers would score another goal just before halftime on an intercepted pass by Josten, who found an open Pore across the box, who'd knock in his 2nd goal of the match. Portland would continue their pressure in the 2nd half, finding themselves 9 shot attempts, including strikes for James Marcelin and Brian Farber, both who had excellent games applying pressure out of the midfield. It seemed like it was only a matter of time before the Timbers would score again and indeed, during the 62nd minute, more crisp, efficient passing would eventually lead to Pore finding Obatola, who would then find the back of the net on a low, left-footed blast. For Obatola, the goal would not only be his first on the season, but also his first goal as a member of the Portland Timbers.

The team will now turn their attention towards preparing for their next game, as they head up to Montreal for a Sunday, 11am kickoff. It'll be a good early season test for the Timbers, as the Montreal Impact are currently the defending league champions. Will the Timbers be able to keep up their unselfish play? Will they be able to keep improving their chemistry and maintain their teamwork? And sure, the team's offense looked good against the "new guys", but how's it going to look against a legitimately tough defense?

"We'll keep on working on our attack." said Thompson when asked about what the focus might be in practice before Sunday. "We just have so many options, so many weapons."

"Now, we get Montreal on Sunday." said Pore. "So, we gotta go back to work and we'll see what happens."

Extra notes: Coach Gavin Wilkinson finally made his way back from a recruiting trip to England, his return to the sidelines delayed by the infamous Icelandic volcano eruption...... 33 year old veteran Taka Suzuki saw his first playing time of the year, the fan favorite from Japan returning after a minor injury kept him out of the season opener..... Forward Bright Dike also made his regular season debut with the team, subbing in during the 70th minute.... . Ryan Pore has totaled 3 goals and an assist already this year. He'll surely find some consideration for USSF player of the week honors..... Lastly, it should be noted that people in this city are still very loyal to the Blazers. After a near 16,000 sellout on Saturday, seeing under 6,000 people in the stands tonight was a bit disappointing. However, the atmosphere in PGE was awesome as always, the 5,000+ in attendance had enough spirit for a sellout and the team played great as well. That combined with the fact that the Blazers stunk up the joint, should go a long way towards helping the Timbers earn a few more fans, hopefully.
