Dropping Timber Match Ratings

April 25th vs Montreal Impact
Ratings are on a scale of 1 to 10. 10 being an absolutely amazing game and 1 meaning you could barely kick the ball. It's all very scientific. One interesting thing about soccer is you can't simply check a box score and see how a player, lets say a defensive player, performed that game. So, match ratings are simply another way to try and assess value to a player, their performance, and their contribution to the team.

Eventually, I think it would be useful if we could create a more defined rating scale. For instance, should Pore get a 10 rating for his game against AC St Louis? He had 2 goals, 1 assist, and that's an awesome game, but what about if Pore pulled a Messi and scored 4 goals in a game? You have to leave room in the ratings scale for possibly bigger performances, right? Also, what if a player subs in and only plays like 3 minutes? They probably didn't do much out there, so should they get a 1 rating? or is 5-6 a good "standard" score? What do you guys think? Give us your input in the comments section or in the forums and maybe we can all come together over time and produce some type of standard rating scale.

Also, thanks so much to everyone who's contributed their match ratings to the data base. The more people who supply ratings the cooler the stats will be, you know, the more the better basically. So, feel free to give your opinion of how each Timber played and rate the players here. Okay, on to the ratings...

-Starters-

Ryan Pore

Pore has scored or assisted on every goal for the Timbers so far this year. Pore is absolutely carrying this team. Where would we be without him?

"So far, the heart of the Timbers (on offense)" -Greener99
Community Rating: 8.9

Steve Purdy
Made a couple big saves, including a yellow card just outside the box that may have prevented a goal. I'd expect to see more of Purdy throughout the season. Oh, and that header was purdy sweet too.
Dropping Timber Rating: 8

"Should've had a goal, and made some great tackles when needed. Even the Yellow card was a smart play." -Greener99
Community Rating: 8.4

Steve Cronin
Had another good performance, should have gotten the shutout.
Dropping Timber Rating: 8

"1 save, defense did great again so not much required. unfortunately couldn't stop the PK, can't really blame him though" -DanP
Community Rating: 8.9

Brian Farber
Farber has played solid all year. Brings a ton of energy and creates opportunities with his speed and passing.
Dropping Timber Rating: 8

"Does what he's asked to do, as always." -Greener99
Community Rating: 7.3

Mamdou Danso
Futty does a great job of using his athleticism to win jump balls and contest plays in the air. He and Purdy completely clogged up the middle against Montreal.
Dropping Timber Rating: 7.5
Community Rating: 7.83

Ian Joy
Steady, solid performace. Good to see the Man with the Band back on the pitch.
Dropping Timber Rating: 7.5
Community Rating: 7.5

Quavas Kirk
Unfortunately, you have to penalize him for the foul on Brown. Maybe it wasn't the right call, but he still has to shoulder some of the blame for giving Brown the opportunity to flop. Besides that, thought Kirk played a nice game and shows a lot of promise with his speed, aggression, and physical abilities.
Dropping Timber Rating: 7

"Hands off in the area, especially, on the road." - Greener99
Community Rating: 6.5

George Josten
Should have had at least 1 goal, probably 2. Could have 1-timed the pass from Farber to get a shot off in the 15th and the other one simply should have been in the back of the net. Still, did a nice job finding space and putting pressure on Montreal's defense, just gotta work on the last bit.
Dropping Timber Rating: 7

"Must learn to finish better." - PtownPimp
Community Rating: 6.3

James Marcelin
An improvement from last week. Still a little rough around the edges, but looks to be getting more comfortable with everyone out there, even fired 2 shots against the Impact.
Dropping Timber Rating: 7

"Turned the ball over WAY too many time in our third" - Greener99
Community Rating: 7

Johan Claesson
Had an un-Claesson like game. Looked a step slow out there and his passing wasn't sharp.
Dropping Timber Rating: 6.5

OJ Obatola
OJ didn't do it. Had a very quiet game. Just didn't create any opportunities for himself or anyone else and on top of that had a handful of blunders, such as ugly turnovers.
Dropping Timber Rating: 6

"Does he have trouble finding the ball? Beginning to get harder to blame this on the midfield" - Greener 99
Community Rating: 6.7

-SUBS-
Doug DeMartin
Played okay, but did record his first assist as a Timber, even if Pore weaved through 3-4 four defenders after he caught the pass. Still, way to go Doug.
Dropping Timber Rating: 6.5
Community Rating: 7.38

Tony McManus
Would have liked to seen him get more playing time, but the rotation is going to be tough and tight all year.
Dropping Timber Rating: 6
Community Rating: 7.25

Rodrigo Lopez
Timbers are very deep across the middle and Lopez is another nice young prospect. Had that beautiful cross off the free kick late in the game.

Stephen Keel

  1. It's hard to rate a guy who only subbed in for a few minutes, maybe we need to just skip it- unless they pulled off something big or made a huge mistake.

Another way to do it is to do what Greener99 did and just give them a "passing" score of 6.

  2. I'd say 5-6 is good. If a "low playing-time sub" didn't do much either good or bad, then they deserve that 5-6 because they weren't a negative, but also didn't really impact the game. I guess, another way to look at it is a score of 4 or lower really needs to be earned with a big mistake or something. I mean, what does a player need to do to get a rating of 1? Maybe play 2 minutes, get 1 touch, and score an own goal with that only touch to lose the game for your team?

  3. Damn you guys are tough raters. The avg. ratings of most of the players is pretty low, like a 6-7. Isn't that like a C/D grade? The Timbers are tied for 1st come on!
