I agree with Dan. It looks far better as a patch. I was among those booing at Director Park today, but I'm less bothered now that I've seen the live version. I still think they could have added a few drop shadows to the old one and called it good, but it's less awful here than it was on that big screen.
I think the patch version looks great. The drawing version could be better comparatively, but it's not awful. Let's be honest, although the retro patch is nice, it doesn't project a serious image. Retro is out of style for the time being. We'll bring it back in a decade. Sometimes I think Timbers fans get a little too possessive, like hipsters who love a certain band until they come out with a hit song. I love dedication, but being snobby is down right stupid, and reminds me more of Seattle than Portland. It's a turn off. MLS needs to bring more Portlanders into the Timbers/football fold. Can the Timbers Army handle sharing that love with outsiders? I hope so, but sometimes I have my doubts.
Wow I am so far from a hipster you have no idea. I was completely ready and excited about a new crest and there were plenty of concepts being bandied about that I would have very warmly welcomed. It's not at all that people are unwilling to change, it's just that this cartoonish version does not feel like the mark of something adult. Many of us devote a good chunk of our lives to the Timbers and it is hard for an adult to devote so much time to something that is represented by a cartoon.
BoDro, very well said and I agree with most of your sentiments. I agree that there can often be an aura of elitism put forth by the "original" or more "hardcore" members of the Timber's Army. And that's a shame. Whether they like it or not, these "hipsters" as you dubbed them, must accept that with the Timbers moving up to the MLS comes a growth in the fanbase and an increase in exposure. Its a nesacary step in the evolution of the franchise. But Portland is extremely fortunate to even expect an explosion in fans next year, most teams that move up the MLS do so with little or no fan fare at all. But not in Soccer City USA.
And to Anonymous....First, thank you for you comments, we really enjoy hearing people's opinions, but why don't you take the time to put a name to your comments? Otherwise your statements don't have any backing or real merit, unless you are ashamed to stand behind them. AND second, I'm curious why you feel the new crest is a "bastardization" of history and why you feel that it is "cartoonish"? I don't see any animated looney tunes characters on it or anything like that. Do you really feel it is that much different than the original? And at least we aren't the Columbus Crew, who have some boy band on their logo.
How do you feel about ticket prices almost doubling and there being 3 levels of price in the terraces? The person behind you paid $99 and you paid $420 ? Hows that going to work?
Welcome to MLS Timbers... Now you see the violence inherent in the system... Hope you all like paying for Merritt's sweet real estate upgrade.
Not sure "not a boy band logo" is a ringing endorsement of a logo. The patch looks like a cub scout merritt badge. Get it merritt badge lol thats teh funay.
Do you expect Merritt Paulson to upgrade the stadium for free? That's just naive. Sports is a business. I'm fine with ticket prices "almost doubling", the Timbers' payroll will probably more than double.
Way to complain about the Timbers offering a $99 season ticket. Keep trollin.
I like it, the old one was dated, and were moving up its time to embrace Paulsen's courage to bring Poerland to the top tier and get behind him. As for the prices they are in line with other clubs, better players, stronger competition, it dos'nt come free
The merit-badge comment made me laugh, but that doesn't change anything. I still like the new logo and it's not as if the old logo has to die... retro kits, friendly uniforms, scarves, etc.
And as far as payroll and ticket prices go, well, I guess it's inevitable that it'll cost some big money to dominate the MLS and possibly bring in a big player like Dempsey or Altidore. Or whatever players will realistically be on the market this winter..
And also, earlier, I meant "boy band" in the best possible way.
Those look terrible, and that's coming from a Crew Fan, where I thought we had the worst crest in professional sports. Looks like a minor league hockey team logo, NICE WORK!
Dan-- You Are Wrong As Usual-- Merritt Paulson is not upgrading the stadium-- You and I are but not Paul because his property is outside of CofP. I beleive Dolph is within those boundaries. Do you really think this is the most effective uses of your property taxes? How do you think the CofP is doing with their budget? Do you think this spending is more worthwhile than schools? What essential servies would you be willing to cut in order to give Merritt Paulson a new stadium to run HIS bussines through? Don't you care about providing even the most basic level of education for your new child?
"Don't you care about providing even the most basic level of education for your new child?"
Way to create a false dilemma as well as introducing multiple red herrings along the way.
The new logo has very little to do with the stadium deal, and I don't feel like repeating the debate. It is an extremely modest stadium upgrade, which is paid for both publicly and privately, as most stadium deals are.
Dan doesn't care about his kid, he barely lets him watch TV! Your kid's gonna be an idiot! The question you should really be asking yourself Dan... is our children learning?
Also, red herrings distract me because I'm very easily entertained...
I hated the crest when they showed it on the big drop down thing.
Then I went and looked at it on the shirts and such they were selling. It looked alot better. I'm not wild about the shading on the axe and I liked the name of the city and club as they were on the old crest, otherwise its grown on me.
If you watch the video clues it does seem like they put alot of thought and work into what this crest represents and people should take that into account.
Think about it as if they had to change it to represent the full might of the Timbers Army because the old one, though wonderful, didn't convey they power that our fans have come to show.
There has been a lot of reactionary commentary over the last couple of days. To put this in perspective, would you rather have a great team and a poor logo, or a great logo and an poor team? The logo can evolve by shrinking everything to fit inside the circle and losing the axe shading. Easy. A team is much harder to build.
I think a lot of people are uncertain and perhaps a bit fearful of where things will go next season. That underlying fear has played into some of the reactions to the logo. I'm not saying the criticisms don't have merit, but the tone of some of the responses has been excessive.
Also, we are going to have one of the best stadiums in the country to watch soccer from. Why would you complain about that?
Logo looks good, but that's beside the point: I'm a little embarrassed by the TA right now. It's not their reaction that's ridiculous, it's the way they're going about voicing it.
holy crap, people are fired up about this crest. I guess I just dont really care that much, i mean its only a logo, and the new one is pretty much the same. And like people said winning is all that really matters.
I do like the original crest better, but its the original, its always gonna be better. Fans have the right to voice their opinion, but don't act like a bunch of whiny, annoying babies and just deal with it.
And as for Merit Paulson. In my book, he's awesome. He helped bring soccer to Portland and he's going to be one of the best owners in the MLS for a long time. To say we're paying for his business by supporting the Timbers is sooo stupid. If you don't like the product then don't go to the games. Simple. It wont make a difference cause every games gonna sellout next season anyway and the new stadium is going to be amazing. Go Timbers!!!
It is not betrayal to boo the proposed crest.
ReplyDeleteStanding up against this bastardization of our history is what those who really love the club will do.
It's the people who are lying down and saying 'maybe it will grow on me' that are betraying the Timbers and Portland.
It is bad. We deserved better and we will achieve that through a grassroots effort to remove this logo before first kick in 2011.
It doesn't look too bad as a patch. The logo itself with the shading is just too much of a cartoon.
ReplyDeleteI'm too happy to worry about that shit right now though.
ReplyDeleteUSA!
did the crest even change? looks the same to me
ReplyDeleteIt brought tears to my eyes

The crest will work. The gosh awful yellow will NOT! That more than anything has to go!
