The MLS Numbers: MLS Team Payrolls in 2010

Dropping Timber ran the numbers on how big payrolls are panning out in the 2010 season.  Sure the Galaxy have the biggest payroll at $11 million dollars and are the top team in the league right now, but that is over four times what Real Salt Lake and Columbus are paying for slightly less points.  The efficiency ranking shows that the teams paying designated players big money are all near the bottom in results per dollar.

This is something the Timbers management may want to consider, since the Portland fan base probably won't need a splashy name like Ljungberg, Beckham or Henry in order to draw crowds.

  1. Good stuff. Where'd you get the payroll raw numbers to do your analysis?

  2. The players union has a PDF of salaries that they release. I copied it into a spreadsheet and summed each teach. It was released in June and won't include signings like Henry.

  4. I like this post, but as Dan says, it doesn't include the latest DP signings nor the trades that have taken place. In some cases, like Chicago and the Red Bulls, the numbers change dramatically.

    Big salaries not included are:
    Nfuko - Seattle
    Henry - RBNY
    Marquez - RBNY
    Castillo - Chicago
    Ljungberg from Seattle to Chicago
    Bošković - DC United

  5. N'Kufo's on there, $480,000 .

Alvaro Fernandez isn't, and Ljungberg is still listed as Seattle.

  6. I'll do an end of season update with some adjustments for bigger salaries.

  7. Just curious, what does PPG mean?

  8. Yeah, points per game. Just in case you are new to soccer standings, 3 points for a win and 1 for a draw.
