Playoff Race Updates

  • Carolina and Montreal fought to a 1-1 tie at Saputo Stadium, bringing the Timbers magic number down to 9.
  • Puerto Rico picked up a win over Minnesota, keeping them in contention for the commissioner's cup.
  • Rochester's tie against the Whitecaps made it mathematically impossible for them to take the top spot. The race is now officially down to four teams.

POSTGAME: Mired in Marsh, Portland Settles for a Draw on the Way to 24

Despite the rain soaked playing surface, the Timbers managed their way to a 0-0 draw Saturday evening against the Battery, their historic unbeaten streak now pushed to 24 league matches. However, considering Portland played with man-up advantage for over an hour, some may feel coming away from Charleston with only a draw was a bit of disappointment. Unable to score or really take control with the match 11 on 10, perhaps some of that discontent lays with the players themselves. Regardless, there is the sense here that, nothing aside from a loss, is really "settling". I'd say the overruling consensus is that the team avoided a loss and that they're still atop of the USL standings in a favorable position to win the Commisioner's Cup.
The playing conditions were a major factor in the outcome. With the field drenched in rain, the players not only had to be conscience of their own stability, but had to adjust to a ball that moved unpredictably through the wet surface. It was common to see passes whip over the water one moment and then suddenly come to an abrupt stop in a puddle. At first notion, I thought the slick field would perhaps favor the Timbers, since they're used to a quicker surface on the PGE turf, but this wasn't the case. The Charleston players seemed to handle the conditions better, continuing to put pressure on the Timber defense even after going down a man. For a majority of the match, the Timbers just seemed out of sync, their play especially ragged in the 2nd half. Charleston outshot Portland 8-5 on the match, aggressively forcing set pieces, and earning more corner kicks overall 4-2.

Cronin played well again, grabbing another shutout for the season. He was put to the test multiple times, making 3 official saves on the night. Stephen Keel also did his part on defense, making key break-ups in the box, and saving a couple goals himself. All season Keel has been a vocal leader and a strong presence on the Tmber's backline. Rain or not, Portland's defense has been called to question since Cameron Knowles misfortunate injury a couple weeks ago. Mamadou Danso, who has been taking most of Knowles' minutes, is still trying to adjust and find his way. Against the battery, he made some clumsy passes, carelessly turning over possession too often. But perhaps some miscommunication is to be expected with a player fitting into a new and more demanding role, unfortunately for the Timbers with only 5 games left on the season, the postseason is rapidly approaching. In their favor however, is the fact that 4 of those last 5 matches are against non-playoff teams and will also be played at home.

A quick note on Ian Fuller's red card. He deserved it. Pore made light, incidental contact with Charleston's keeper Wiggans chasing a loose ball in the box, to which Fuller took great offense, instantly charging Pore and grabbing him with both hands around the shirt collar. I can understand protecting your players, especially your keeper, but it was still a gross overreaction, considering Pore instantly raised his hand to apologize. The refs must have felt the need to make an example of Fuller to keep control of the match under the extreme conditions.

Last Drop - A couple of new faces. In the 2nd half, new signee Rodrigo Lopez subbed in and got to play about 32 minutes. I thought Lopez looked like a player who could definitely contribute to this team - he's got speed and moved the ball efficiently and quickly around the pitch. It will be interesting to see how much playing time he'll get in the future and if he can break into the rotation this late in the year. Also on Friday, the Timbers signed Mexican-born defender, Ivan Becerra, a standout from the PDL champion Ventura Fusion. This is certainly a sign that Coach Wilkinson feels the need to solidify and shore up that defensive line, providing a little more insurance with Knowles missing in action.

GAME PREVIEW: Charleston's Blackbaud Stadium Looms as Serious Threat to the Streak

Portland Timbers

VS
Charleston Battery

5:00p Friday
August 28th @ Blackbaud Stadium
LIVE on Fox Soccer Channel
& Online at USLlive.com

For the team's last contest in August, the Timbers will take on the Battery in Charleston, where they look to push their historic streak to 24 matches Unbeaten. A lot will be on the line at Blackbaud Stadium Friday night, as both teams are hoping to claim this year's Commissioner's Cup, awarded to the club that finishes the year atop of the USL standings.

Currently, there are streaks within The Big Streak, so to speak. The 1st place Timber's are also riding a 5 match winning streak, exploding for 12 goals in those games, a stretch in which the team's play on the pitch has been splendid, their confidence visibly rising with every victory. On an individual level, Ryan Pore has found the back of the net in ALL 6 games since returning from injury, his scoring streak adding to what's already the league's most productive offense. Mandjou Keita, recently named to the USL Team of the Week for the 5th time this year, leads the league in goals and total points. Pore is 2nd in the league in both categories as well.

The Battery, who are tied for 2nd place, trailing 6 points behind the Timbers, will have to deal with a tenacious and stingy Portland defense. Despite losing star defender Cameron Knowles for the season, the Timbers have only allowed 4 goals this entire month and keeper Steve Cronin has had 2 August shutouts already. Mamadou Danso and Takuro Nishimura are simply more proof of this team's depth, and both will need to keep playing well as the playoffs approach. The Portland juggernaut will roll into South Carolina bursting with momentum, but can they pull together yet again for the last serious road test of the season?

Charleston will be motivated and dangerous, as they look to avenge their only loss of the month. This will be the final regular season meeting between these two clubs - Portland earning a draw early in the year at Blackbaud Stadium and then annihilating the Battery 3-1 at PGE Park. However, at home the Battery are best, accumulating a record of 7-1-4 and only allowing 6 goals against. Don't be fooled by Blackbaud Stadium's diminuitive stature either, although only seating 5,100 at full capacity, the intimate design puts the crowd right on the field, and the fans should be out in force to root against the Timber's reaching No. 24 at their expense. For extra incentive, if the Battery get the victory they officially clinch a spot in the playoffs, something the Timber's have already accomplished. Either way, it's going to be an absolute battle, as two of the favorites to win the USL championship this year meet. Looks like we're in store for a humid summer night down South, with a high around 84 degrees, 40% percipitation, and a chance for a few thunderstorms.

Players to Watch
Tsuyoshi Yoshitake - In Charleston's last couple matches, the midfielder scored 2 goals in the team's win over Cleveland and assisted in the game's only goal in a draw against the Whitecaps. Containing Yoshitake's quick, attacking style will be a key for the Timber's defense.

Tyler Hemming - Hemming is an aggressive midfielder who doesn't shy away from contact when trying to win balls and won't be afraid to take a shot on goal either - second on the team with 30 attempts. As usual, this game will be won in the midfield, so expect physical play and expect confrontations with Mcmanus. Hemming leads the Battery with 30 fouls on the season.

Keith Wiggans - Charleston's regular starter at keeper, Dusty Hudock, has missed the last 3 matches due to injury. He leads the USL in shutouts with 12 on the year. Wiggan's first game filling in he took a beating from the Timbers. He's rebounded a bit since then, only allowing 2 goals in as many matches. How will he do a second time around?

One last drop - Midfielder Rodrigo Lopez, recently signed by the Timbers, will be officially activated and ready for any possible action on Friday.

***Just a couple quick updates (Dan):
Carolina kept the race interesting last night. They are now within 3 points of Portland after their 9-0 bitchslapping of Miami. No, that's not a typo either. Way to fuck up the goal differential Miami. Portland is just barely holding on to the league lead now. The Railhawks have 5 games remaining.
Also, we revised our magic number for Portland down to 12. The Timbers own the head-to-head tiebreaker over Carolina, meaning if both teams end with 63 points (Carolina's ceiling), Portland would still take the Commissioner's Cup.

USL Playoff Race Update

If the playoffs were held today, here are the top seven teams that would be in:

Portland is the only team to clinch a spot in the playoffs. The top five teams are still mathematically able to take the top spot (with Rochester being a very long shot), but Portland is emerging as a slight favorite.

Let's take a look at the remaining schedules of the top four teams.

Portland and Charleston have the easiest remaining schedules. With four games remaining in PGE Park, and four more games against the bottom of the league, the Timbers have a huge opportunity to hold on to the top spot.

Portland's magic # for the Commissioner's Cup is 13. If they can get 13 more points from their remaining games, they will guarantee the top spot. If Carolina misses any points by getting a tie or a loss in their next game, that magic # will also go down.

POSTGAME: Timbers First to Clinch Playoff Berth, Beat Miami 3 - 1

Last night at PGE Park, in front of a crowd of nearly 14,000 - the Portland Timbers with their 3-1 victory over the Miami FC Blues, became the first team in the USL First Division to clinch a spot in this year's playoffs. Their historic unbeaten streak now stands at 23 matches and the Timbers sit at 1st place in the league standings, 6 pts ahead of Carolina and Charleston, who are tied in 2nd. With their sights certainly set on higher goals, the Timbers will take this postseason berth in passing, their focus prudently aimed on winning the Commissioner's Cup (the regular season championship) and earning the first round playoff bye that comes with it. Another question must linger in the back of the minds of the Timber's players - with only two road games remaining, can this team finish the rest of the regular season unbeaten? The talent, depth, and confidence level of this team seems to suggest it might be so.

Before anything else, i'd like to say what a wonderful tribute it was to defender Cameron Knowles, that the Timber Army flew New Zealand flags throughout the crowd to honor him for all he's done for this team - a great gesture. And now to the game - forward Mandjou Keita, scored two goals, pushing his season total to a team leading 11 scores. He now leads the USL in goals scored and total points with 28. Enough can't be said about the job Keita has done for this squad, his combination of speed and strength constantly putting pressure on the defense, and his quick strike and reflexes in the box make him one of the most dangerous players in the entire league. As expected for a first year player, he came out of the gates a little slow, taking time to adjust to the new league, but he's sure found his way now, hasn't he?

Although not the Team's best overall performance this season, Portland still played a very solid game, outshooting the Blues 19-7 and earning more corner kicks 8-1. Unfortunately, with the exception of Keita's 1st half goal, the Timbers weren't able to capitalize on their advantage in possessions. And after the Blues scored the 2nd half equalizer it appeared the Timbers were ready to cough up another two points in the standings, a dissapointment they've had to face a few times this year. However, the players pulled together and responded - Merritt's score serving as a wake up call - the Timber's tallying off two more goals to close out the game. It was a real showing of grit and tenacity by this team, something Coach Wilkinson should be able to find pride in.

It has been a season of magical moments and Saturday night was no different. After Keita's go ahead goal in the 81st minute, the only dissapointment remained that Ryan Pore had not been able to find the back of the net and keep his individual scoring streak alive. Then, magically, in stoppage time, Taka suddenly broke up a play, sent a lead pass to Keita in the corner, who then whipped a beautiful ball to Pore across the box. And almost unbelievably, Pore was wide open, nobody even near him, giving him time to take a few touches before blasting the ball past the helpless and defenseless Blues keeper. The streak within the streak! Really an incredible moment in an incredible season, and we're not done yet.

One last drop - the importance of the Timber's depth needs to be noted again. It allows Coach Wilkinson to make substitutions liberally, ensuring the team can play freely and with aggresion, and still have fresh legs down the stretch. Also, during moments this season when we've had injuries, the team has been able to keep going without missing a beat, plugging in another skilled player off the bench. Cameron Knowle's recent injury is a good example, even with a player of his value out, this team has prevailed - players like Mamadou Danso and Takuro Nishimura filling in valiantly. Nishimura especially looked sharp with some nice tackles and some fancy ball work, even blasting a couple shots on goal. I'll be eager to see what he can bring the rest of the year.

Game Preview Struggling Miami comes to Timberland

Portland Timbers
VS
Miami FC Blues
7:00 PM Saturday, August 22nd
PGE Park
Live on Fox Soccer Network

The Timber's 22 game unbeaten streak marches into a Saturday evening match at PGE Park against bottom dwelling Miami FC Blues. Portland is at the top of league and the top of their game after a 4-1 crushing of Rochester last Saturday. Ryan Pore is on a terror with a 5 game goal scoring streak and the Timbers are 10-0-0 when scoring in the first half.

The Blues horrible goal scoring is obviously their biggest problem, they have only scored 19 goals in 21 games. Compare that to Portland's 37 goals in 23 games and you get the picture. The league's teams have had no problem finding the back of Miami's net some 29 times, that is over twice as many goals the Timbers have allowed.

Miami lost last week 1-nil to the Minnesota Thunder at home. That was the chaotic Thunders first road victory of the year. Expect Miami to have better focus as they look to stop the bleeding. Miami is still in the hunt for a playoff berth and even a draw in Portland would be an important step in that direction.

Miami has had trouble putting the ball in the net and putting fans in seats. It is the second worst goal scoring team and it's 1,100 average attendance is dead last in the USL. Miami does lead the league in blow used during matches (sources questionable). To boost attendance figures Miami is now offering to shave one player's head for every 500 fans who show up. That is no joke, just check out miamifc.com.

Midfielder Rodrigo López signs with the Timbers

The Timbers signed Mexican-American midfielder Rodrigo López. Chivas USA signed Lopez in 2005 when he was only 18, he saw little playing time in a three year stint. The now 22 year old midfielder has been playing for Querétaro of Mexico's top professional Primera Division and most recently for the USL's Premier Develop League Ventura County Fusion. López was a guest player in Portland's 2-2 match with Burnley back in July and he impressed with a late free kick goal (video below). The Timber's roster now stands at 25 players with a August 28th roster freeze deadline. The big question will be how much playing time, if any will Lopez see in this Saturday's match with Miami.

3 Timbers Earn Team of the Week Honors

David Hayes was recognized for his excellent defensive skills which the Timbers needed after losing Cameron Knowles last week. Hayes also had an assist in the slaying of Rochester.
Ryan Pore
is on a five game scoring streak and had two of those on the road last week.
Mandjou Keita
the USL's point leader scored and had an assist. Keita's nine goals this season has him tied with Rochester's Johnny Menyongar for league leader.

22 Games Undefeated

Portland crushed the Rochester Rhinos 4-1, took their tusks and then left the corpses to rot in the field. Tasteless picture is related. Pore keeps his streak alive scoring in his fifth straight game. Portland is 10-0-0 in games when scoring in the first half.

The Playoff Race

The Timbers magic number now stands at 9. They need 9 points to qualify for the playoffs, and with eight games remaining in August and September, that is almost a lock. Other than Portland, three teams have the most realistic chance for the top spot, Carolina, Charleston and Puerto Rico. Out of those teams, the Timbers only have a match remaining against Charleston on the 28th, so that will be one of their biggest remaining games. Rochester still has an outside shot at the top spot as well, and Portland has two more remaining against the Rhinos. Portland finishes the season with two games in PGE Park against the basement-dwelling Cleveland City Stars, which should be a good chance for them to close out the season on a high note with a shot at the Commissioner's Cup.

POSTGAME: 21 Unbeaten - Timbers Win, But Lose Knowles

The Portland Timbers extend their league leading, record-breaking, unbeaten streak to 21 matches and sneak out of Saputo Stadium with three points on a late-game goal by Ryan Pore. Pore has been on a tear since returning recently, finding the back of the net in the club's last four matches. The Timbers leap back into 1st place, now a point ahead of Charleston in the standings. A hard fought match, both teams showed high levels of intensity and effort, reflecting just how high the stakes have become as the season winds to a close. The Timbers are playing with a ton of confidence and have built even more momentum, as they're set to play the next 2 of 3 on the road, heading now to Rochester for a matchup with the fifth place Rhinos on Saturday.

- Action was back and forth all match, both teams getting their chances to take shots on goal. Keita made his presence known early, making forceful runs and stretching the defense. However, on the other side, Roberto Brown was equally threatening and Montreal closed the first half with their best scoring opportunities. In many ways, the Timbers were lucky to come away with a 0 - 0 halftime score.

- The aggression level picked up in the 2nd half. There were quite a few hard challenges and rough fouls, ultimately resulting in yellow cards on both sides (3 for the Impact), but to be expected when emotions are running high. Fatigue became a visible factor and each Coach used their substitutions liberally. It became quite the game of human chess, neither man willing to give up a strategic inch. With the Timbers starting to get pushed around, Coach Wilkinson pushed back - finishing the match with a more phsyical lineup, taking out Nimo for Farber, and opting to go with Forrest instead of Keita. Smart decisions in a relentlessly paced game.

- The Kevin Forrest substitution proved to be decisive, as he made his presence known right from the get go, picking up a yellow card on his first touch. After a series of fouls, his tanacity finally paid off in the 83rd minute, as he found his way up the sideline, sending a whipping waist-high cross through to Pore for a one-timer into the back of the net. A great example of how the Timbers can be so instantaneous and deadly on their counter attacks. Portland's bench came through again. In a tough, grind it out game, the team's depth will eventually wear down their opponent.

- The Timbers defense was incredible tonight. They did a great job of swarming the Impact players and suffocating any runs near the box. Although, the real battle in this game took place in the midfield and Mcmanus was solid in defending and pestering O'Brien. However, the depth of our defense will be put to the test the rest of the year, as Cameron Knowles looks to now be lost with a severe leg injury. Occurring late in the 2nd half, Knowles dove for a loose ball, crashing into an Impact player, coming away with a potential broken leg. Although no official word is in, judging from the gruesome nature of the incident and Knowles' departure on a stretcher, it seems a safe bet that he'll be out for the season and probably the playoffs. Best of luck to Cameron and a speedy recovery, one of the top defenders in the USL, he'll surely be missed. A tough pill to swallow and one that makes this victory very bitter-sweet.

GAME PREVIEW: The Final 9, Timbers Hit the Road

Portland Timbers

VS

Montreal Impact

Wednesday, August 12th
4:45 pm @ Montreal
Online LIVE at USLlive.com

Preview: With only nine matches remaining on the season, the Timbers head north across the border to Montreal. The 1st place Timbers play three of their next four matches on the road, all against playoff-bound teams - going to Rochester on Saturday, then a week later, home to host Puerto Rico before heading to Charleston for another tough road test. It will be a grueling gut-check moment for this team as they've already accomplished so much in this historic season. Going on 20 matches unbeaten, can this team maintain its focus and hunger as the playoff race tightens up? Fortunately for Portland, the last five games will truly be a "home" stetch. The Timbers finish the regular season with four out their last five games at PGE Park.

The Timbers will head into Montreal as the most dominant team in the USL - boasting the stingiest defense (GA 11) and the most productive offense (GF 32) - tops in the league for both. The calling card of this team has been its depth, balance, and aggresive play and as expected for a team in 1st place there are accolades to go around; the defense has been physical and intimidating, the midfield play has been exceptional, and the front six have been scoring goals. Keeper Steve Cronin, voted by the fans as the Timber's Man of the Month, deserves as much credit as anyone for the team's success with seven shutouts this year.

This will be the final meeting of the regular season between these two clubs, the first two matches in June were played at Portland, the Timbers winning both. The Impact will be looking to regain some measure of dignity after the last meeting ended in a 4-nil beating. Montreal currently sits in 6th place, with the top 7 teams making the playoffs, the Impact are a likely first round playoff opponent for the Timbers.

Players to watch...
Roberto Brown - The Panamanian-born forward leads the team in total points and goals scored. The aggresive veteran helped the Impact secure a 1-0 victory on Sunday, scoring the games only goal. He'll be a lot to handle for the defense.

Eddie Sebrango-Rodriguez - The other half of Montreal's senior citizen forward tandem, the 36-year old has logged a lot of minutes this season and has been very productive. He's been around the USl for a long time and has contributed to many winning clubs over the years, nobody to sleep on.

Rocco Placentino - After spending six seasons playing in Italy, the midfielder comes home to Montreal and has been an important cog in their offensive attack this year. He leads the team in assists with 5 and is also third on the team in shot attempts with 24, finding the back of the net on 2 of those.

Sounders fans in denial over Cascadia Cup belonging to Portland

Check out the verbal acrobatics Sounders fans are going through in order to deny that Portland won the Cascadia Cup:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Cascadia_Cup

From Sounders fan, "Soccerafficianado" (that user name almost makes me want to change the introductory text for Dropping Timber...)

The rules to the competition are determined each year by the supporters of all three teams. There is no on-going rule that says only league matches count. The past is not an indicator of the present. The three teams are in different leagues this season and next, hence a different set of rules was needed once again. The revised article clearly states how the competition will be settled this year. Portland and Vancouver will count league matches, and Seattle will include other matches played against Portland and Seattle. The #2 reference points to an article from 2007, but it is not supporting a time-sensitive fact. It supports that the basis of the competition involves the teams Portland Timbers, Seattle Sounders, and Vancouver Whitecaps. The #3 reference is about the game that was played between Portland and Seattle on July 1. It is not about the Cascadia Cup.

POSTGAME: Welcome to the Alex Nimo Show, Timbers Stomp Battery 3 - 0

Making the most of his starting opportunity, midfielder Alex Nimo put on an exciting show for the fans at PGE Park tonight. Nimo finished the match with 1 goal and 1 assist. An up-and-coming MLS prospect on loan from Real Salt Lake, Caoch Wilkinson gave Nimo the start in hopes that his youthful engery would help give the team an offensive spark - the gamble paid off. Early in the 1st half, Nimo lofted a beautiful volley into the air leading to a Keita header and later would slip behind the defense to find the back of the net himself. Another impressive showing of this team's incredible depth and versatility, as they score 3 goals on the league's best defense. The Timber's unbeaten streak now stands at an amazing 20 matches.

It must be noted that Charleston's starting goalie, Dusty Hudock, was unable to play, this certainly having a major factor in the outcome of the game. The Battery had only given up 10 goals going into the match and Hudock leads the league in shutouts with 12 this season. A tough act to follow for back-up goalie Keith Wiggans, not mention the Timber's are the league's top scoring team.

Ryan Pore played well again, scoring on a assist from Keita. There was a moment in the 2nd half, leading up to Charleston's goal, that the Timber's were a bit relaxed, but Pore stepped up and provided a lot of aggresion after Nimo subbed out. The Timber's onslaught seemed inevitable, they failed to score on multiple 4 vs 1 breaks, but Pore eventually brokethrough. Pore and Keita ran well together tonight and didn't get in each other's way, accept when they, literally, collided into another, both players tumbling onto the pitch. But besides that.
Josten has had a couple rough games. Today, he especially had a tough go, botching more than one play with bad touches or inaccurate passes. Josten's played solid this season, but sometimes he gets tunnel vision out there and misses open teammeates. He needs to move the ball quicker and not try to do everything himself. Nimo could of had 2 assists today if not for a mis-kicked ball on open net by Josten.

The fight in the 2nd half, resulting in a red card and an ejected Battery player, was a product of poor referee management of the match. All game the refs let the players get away with a lot rough play and hard challenges. It wasn't surprising to see frustrations boil over into a confrontation on the pitch. But I think one thing that's nice to see is players that are actually invested in the outcome of the match their playing. Players from both teams showed great passion and intestity. In a age of overpaid prima donna athletes, it's great to see the type of unbridled enthusiasm and the atmosphere of pure competition that the USL can bring.

The Timbers are now in a two way tie for 1st place with the Carolina Railhawks. Charleston trails by one point and the Islanders are not too far back from there. It's basically a four-way race for 1st place, get ready, it's going to be quite the exciting finish.

The Battery, however, play a match tonight against the Vancouver Whitecaps. The Whitecaps are a tired and beaten team after falling to the Timbers last night and with a victory, the Battery would take over 1st place. If the teams have a draw match, then the Battery would earn only 1 pt, resulting in a 3-way tie for 1st place. Either way, it's awfully tight at the top.

On the second night of a back-to-back, the Battery will have some tired legs and with the Timber's depth, they'll surely be in a position to take advantage. Defense has been the calling card for this Charleston squad with only 9 goals scored against them all season, a league-best. Look for Coach Wilkinson to shake up his line-up a bit and make early substitutions in the 2nd half, something he's not afraid to do. If the Battery come out flat, then the Timbers better get rolling and make certain they get on that scoreboard first.

Saturday will be the 2nd time these teams meet this season, the clubs going for a 1-1 draw in June. They will meet again to conclude the season series later this month in Charleston.

Players to watch
Randi Patterson - The forward leads the Battery in goals scored. He'll be the main break-out threat, especially if the Timber's can score first and force the Battery to press the action. Patterson is young, talented, and hoping to find his way back into the MLS.

Tsuyoshi Yoshitake - When he's played, he's been effective and aggressive for the Battery. In his first season in the USL, he's shown a nice touch with the ball and an ability to create for teammates. He's small and fast, if you blink you might miss him.

Frankie Sanfilippo - This guy's been a rock for his team. Leads the team in minutes played, games played, and games started. Not only a leader on defense, but has 2 goals scored this season out of the backfield. Just business as usual for the former USL-all star.

*** UPDATE:
It looks like the Timbers will be hosting the 1st place Battery tommorrow night, Charleston leads 2-0 as the 1st half nears a close. It's final now- Charleston 2 Vancouver 1

THE POSTGAME - Portland Timbers are 2009 Cascadia Cup Champions! They Beat Vancouver 1 - 0 !

- The defending champions fall and the Timbers extend their unbeaten streak to 19 matches, avenging their only loss on the season. Wth the victory, the Timbers take the season series from the Whitecaps 2-1 and also take the Cascadia Cup Championship, the franchise's first-ever. An exciting game tonight and it's good to the see the Timbers get 3 points after a couple of dissapointing draws, especially the Minnesota debacle. The Timbers move into a 1st place tie with the Carolina Railhawks.

- Suzuki was all over the place tonight. He drew three whistles in the first half with his relentless pressure up the sidelines. The Whitecaps are forced to send multiple defenders after him, thus creating opportunites and space for the other Timber players. He even made a defensive play in the 2nd half, tracking back to break-up a threatening run into the box. Taka's motor just always seems to be running, too bad he's 33, he'd be a fun player to watch in the MLS.

- Also have to drop about Claesson. He made a handful of nice long balls across midfield that opened up great scoring opportunites for the forwards upfront. Claesson, of course, assisting on the game's only goal to Pore.

- Nice to see Ryan Pore back into the swing of things with that goal. He did a good job playing up front tonight with his speed and constant aggression. However, how well can he and Keita co-exist? It seemed like Keita was a bit quiet tonight and got very few touches. In fact, near the end of the game Pore had that break-away where he shot the ball horrible wide and also missed a wide open Keita running across the box. Hopefully, they can learn to share the pitch, give each other space, and not run into each other too much.

- Cronin gets his 7th shutout on the season. He was his solid self defending the net which has become the standard this season. I liked the substitutions that Coach Wilkinson made in the 2nd half. Scott Thompson brought in a little more defense and some fresh legs to give the team enough energy to stave off any late Vancouver runs. Our defense looked sharp, completely opposite of the Whitecaps. Their defenders looked lethargic and played carelessly, no wonder they've allowed 25 goals against them this season.

- That Marlon James is a dangerous player though, huh? The Timbers did a good job of containing him, but he still was able to break through for a number of threatening runs. He's tied for the league lead in goals at an amazing 8 goals in 10 games played. I wouldn't be surprised to see him making waves in the MLS soon, did anybody see the one-timer he had? Again, good thing we have Cronin.

- It's so good when the Timber's score early, as they seem to play more comfortably and with better confidence. We definitely controlled possesion for most of the match and although the Whitecaps had some good shots on goal, we simply outworked them and fought harder tonight.

- Attendance was decent at 10,783. I think the overcast clouds might have kept some people away, but still a solid crowd. And they got to see a fun Timber's victory tonight.

Game Preview Vancouver at Portland

A chance for REVENGE!
Vancouver Whitecaps

Vs.
Portland Timbers
Thursday August 8th, 7:00PM
PGE Park

Cheap beer, cooler weather and an old rivalry will be at PGE Park this Thursday. Vancouver is back at .500 after a 3-1 win over Rochester on Friday. Marlon James scored two of the goals and is the biggest threat on the team. Earlier in the season he scored a hat trick against Minnesota. James has had trouble staying fit to play, but when he does he is the impact player that Vancouver sorely needs. He is tied for the league lead in goals scoring 8 in just 10 games, silencing this hired gun will be key. Portland is tied for second in the league and needs these three points to move into the number one spot.

Keys to the Game

  • Marlon James #9 has proven to be deadly when he is healthy, removing him from the game or from easy chances.
  • Martin Nash #7, the younger brother of NBA superstar Steve Nash is a long time veteran for the Whitecaps. Nash is the captain and has 3 goals and 3 assists. The Whitecaps will need his leadership.
  • Marcus Haber #14 a Vancouver native is having a great first season with 5 goals. This is a player to watch Vancouver develop for 2011.
  • Charles Gbeke #98 has made appearances for 9 different clubs in 10 years. In 2007 while playing for the Montreal Impact he tied for the USL leader in goals with 11. This season he has put 5 in the back of the net.
  • Portland's key to the game is keeping up the potent offense, play solid defense go strong and show us why this may be the best Timbers team ever.

Nice job ref you lost control of the game and then gave away the game by giving Minnesota a PK in the final minutes Those fans in the video are sooooo crazy! What a wild group! I think most of Minnesota's goals come from PKs. Sadly they do.
