With a few of their starters not making the road trip, Coach Wilkinson was forced to tinker with his rotation a bit, forward Jason Mclaughlin getting his third start on the year in place of the injured Mandjou Keita. The Timbers have not escaped this season without their share of injuries. Cameron Knowles, of course, out for the year and midfielder Johan Classeson still out with injury, although he's due to return shortly. With Keita nursing minor ailments and opting for rest instead of making the trip, the Timbers struggled at times to find cohesion offensively, clearly missing their leading goal-scorer. Although the shots were there - the Timbers firing 18 total for the game - the quality was not. Often times Portland had trouble keeping possession and many of their opportunities were wasted with shots going wide or clanging off the crossbar.
Still, in the 1st half the Timbers spent most of the match in the attacking third of the field, but in the 2nd half the Aztex would respond, outplaying Portland and generally looking sharper and more aggressive. Even though Austin only managed 6 shots on the game, they made the most of their strikes, nearly scoring on a few runs. Cronin was forced to make 4 saves on the game, all in the 2nd half. The defense came up big tonight. For the most part, they were able to mark up and shut down the Aztex forwards and gave Portland's offense plenty of opportunities to score. So, perhaps fittingly it was a defender that got us the game-winner.
Portland's depth was a factor again today. Taka, Nimo, and Forrest all came in and provided an important boost off the bench in the 2nd half. The Timber's deep rotation allows them to rest any weary legs and should serve them well heading into the playoffs. However, the fear could be that coasting into the postseason or perhaps taking our success for granted could come back to haunt the Timbers. Motivation and focus will be big keys as the team will need to stay aggressive to ensure they finish strong and lock-up 1st place. Portland has shown a slight tendency to play down to their competition, settling for a draw against Cleveland in their only meeting and struggling to pull out the win earlier in the season against the Aztex also. It will be a balancing act for Coach Wilkinson as he tries to rest legs, adjust playing rotations, and still get this team playing its best soccer down the stretch. The Timbers will return home Friday trying for a season sweep of the series with Austin and depending on pending results, could be trying for something quite a bit bigger as well.
Last drop - Attendance at the match was 2,439. It was pathetic. A ghost stadium. The far stands were completely empty. Literally, I don't think there was one person seated there, but I guess if your team sucked and your pitch looked like a football field...well, what else can you expect?
Look, Keel is so cool there is a rock band named after him.

Don't mess with these guys.
All that really matters was that they won. Can't wait to watch them at home. Dropping Timber section at PGE?
ReplyDeletePlus it was awesome that keel got the goal. Youtube Keel music videos. this band is badass!
Typical ugly USL game. Glad the Timbers pulled it out.
ReplyDeleteKeel's hair wins every game!
ReplyDeleteIn point of fact, the stadium the Aztex played in this season seats 10K, which even the mighty Timbers wouldn't have come close to filling until this year (the year after the move to MLS was announced). Anyway, the far stands were indeed "literally empty"; they were closed.
ReplyDeleteAnd surely it hasn't been that long since it was your team that sucked ... oh wait, there it is: dead last in 2008.
So -- nice one, dogging a last-place expansion club, when your first-place team won the game. You stay classy, Portland.
I'm sorry to hurt your feelings Aztexan, I suppose it was a bit of a cheap shot. I'm not sure class has anything to do with it, perhaps you're taking things a little personally. I didn't know we were at a funeral.
ReplyDeleteYou also need to be corrected. Despite us being last in 2008, the Timbers also had an avg. attendance of 8,500, still an increase from the previous years. So, I'd say we'd sell out Nelson Field at least a few times. Portland has had one of the best attendance records in the USl for a while now. We've been steadily drawing fans well before the MLS announcement. Maybe your upset emotions should be directed at your fellow Austin fans. Where were they?
Timber fans support their team. But it's possible we just don't have anything better to do, so don't be too jealous.
Why were the far stands closed? Probably because nobody goes to your games. At least you do better than Miami though.
ReplyDeleteWay to play the expansion team card... so are we supposed to pretend that we didn't win just because you suck?
@Jobin - it's not that hard to figure out, hombre. Would you rather have 2,500 people spread across one, 5,000-seat side, or the same number spread out even further, across both sides? This was actually one of our lowest attendances, the usual has been more like 4-5K.
ReplyDeleteAnd being expansion isn't a "card", it's a fact. Most new teams -- new businesses period, for that matter -- take some time to get off the ground.
Congratulations on getting that 86th minute goal, basically off our goalkeeper's error, from a team that sucks so bad.
But it's okay, I see you're trying to be irreverent & funny. You'll get to there eventually if you keep trying. I'm not sure likening your team to a load of shit is that good of a start, but at least it's honest.
P.S. I'm glad at least that the better team from the Pacific Northwest advanced in the Open Cup. Advanced all the way to win, I'm sure you're happy for them.
P.P.S. Hope I didn't hurt anyone's feelings. It's not a funeral, you know!
I'm pretty sure the best team in the Northwest gets to hold the Cascadia cup. That is great for Shittle that they made it to the Open Cup finals. I'd make a cheap shot about your rival team, but like you said, you're an expansion team and probably don't have one because NO ONE GIVES A FUCK ABOUT YOU.
ReplyDeleteJobin- you don't make your point about not caring very well when you SCREAM IN ALL CAPS.
ReplyDeleteAztexan- I'll make sure to drop a huge Timber for you next time I'm in Austin. Any restaurants and/or all-you-can-eat buffets that you especially enjoy? Sometimes the stench can last for weeks.
Well Aztexan, I guess class went out the window, huh?
ReplyDeleteBut seriously, congrats to the Aztex, you guys have played us tough all year, or a more accurate description might be that we've played down to you level since you're in last place. You guys have some good young talent though, so hopefully you'll be able to keep building on that. I wish you luck as soccer growth anywhere in the US is good.
Honestly, describing your attendance as "pathetic" was a bit harsh. It WAS labor day. And you're right, most of the timber we drop is shit, hence the name. But we can continue this debate in a more "classy" manner, cant we gentleman? At least it will be decided on the field this friday. Timbers win 2-0.
PS If we're NOT at a funeral Aztexan, then can't we talk smack about your "dead" team? It's not a Faux Pa is it? I know, another bad joke by me... my GF said it didnt make sense either, but she's... nm.
PSS Dont get your feathers ruffled by Jobin, he seems to be our resident antagonist.
Yeah, it's all good. Getting Jobin wound up enough to go all-caps & drop an f-bomb was enough for me. Portland & Austin are too similar (from what I understand; I've never been up your way myself) to hate each other too much.
ReplyDeleteI must say though, I'm now hoping more than ever now that the Aztex give you an upset on Friday, and send your nice, big crowd home sad & humiliated. Sure it's a long shot, but what else do we have to look forward to now? ;-)
And then you can beat up on Cleveland all you want.
P.S. You should listen to your GF's feedback about your "jokes".
i listen to her enough as is... ugh
ReplyDelete"Getting Jobin wound up enough to go all-caps & drop an f-bomb was enough for me. "
ReplyDeleteWow, so basically admit you are a troll. By the way your team name is shit, your attendance is shit and you guys can't even keep track of who is supposed to play. I can understand expansion teams not winning but you can at least keep from embarrassing yourselves.
No, sweetheart, I'm not a troll. How about you, though? Let's see.
ReplyDeleteAll caps? Check. Abusive profanity? Check. Hypocritically "playing the expansion card" after hassling me about it? Check. Continuing to argue with me ad nauseam, even though NO ONE GIVES A FUCK ABOUT ME? Check!
Kevin, Dan: well met & good luck to you & your team (after their humiliating loss to Austin on Friday, of course). Jobin: whatever, dude.
Hope we see you in the postgame comments on Friday Aztexan. I'm guessing things may not go the way you are expecting.
ReplyDeletePuerto Rico needs to tie or lose on Thursday. Then we can clinch on Friday when we pick up our 3 free points from the Aztex.
ReplyDeleteHi Kevin, You write some thorough pieces, good job!
