Portland Timbers Love

MLS Talk ran a piece on the Timbers today titled "What the Portland Timbers Mean to the Credibility of MLS."
Yet despite the attention surrounding the Sounders, Portland’s 2011 entrance into the American top-flight will raise the bar once more. Simply stated, Portland has the best set of supporters in American soccer. Before the backlash begins, allow me to explain. Working in the Pacific Northwest soccer scene has given me a unique insight into the Interstate 5 corridor. From Portland to Vancouver, this part of North America is rife with football support that stems from large expatriate communities and local ties to the defunct North American Soccer League. Carrying the self-proclaimed title of “Soccer City USA”, Portland can bear this label because no other city rallies behind a second tier club in the same manner as Timbers fans.

As if you didn't already know this.

  1. Paulson said yesterday that the MLS deal hinges on finding a home for the baseball team. He backpedaled a bit on that today though. Hopefully this is just negotiating talk, and he is still fully committed to MLS in 2011.

Also, it looks like Soccer City USA is down. I think it is their name servers. Hopefully they are able to get that fixed.

  2. I think your hopes are right scott, it's just negotiating tough talk by Paulson. i thought i remembered reading last week that baseball was going to find a home in beaverton, but it seems like stories and facts get distorted every other week. Really, im not too worried about it, just seems that they've reached the point of no return. It would become a huge public blunder if it fell apart now.

  3. Soccer city is working fine now. What the fuck is wrong with the people on their boards though? It's 95% images from 4chan and 5% soccer discussion...

  4. Not the smartest negotiating point by Paulson-- why should Beaverton care whether or not Portland gets an MLS team? I wouldn't worry about it too much.

RE soccercityusa.com: I think they just have a few bad seeds on the forum. Overall, it is a great site and very informative, especially their blog. BTW, if you want to talk smack, it would be better if you didn't post anonymously.
