Dropping Timber Match Ratings

May 13th VS Crystal Palace Baltimore
Ratings are on a scale of 1 to 10. 10 beings an absolutely incredible game and 1 meaning you could barely kick the ball. One interesting thing about soccer is you can't simply check a box score and see how a player, lets say a defensive player, performed that game. So, match ratings are simply another way to try and assess value to a player, their performance, and their contribution to the team.

Eventually, I think it would be useful if we could create a more defined rating scale. For instance, should Pore get a 10 rating for his game against AC St Louis? He had 2 goals, 1 assist, and that's an awesome game, but what about if Pore pulled a Messi and scored 4 goals in a game? You have to leave room in the ratings scale for possibly bigger performances, right? Also, what if a player subs in and only plays like 3 minutes? They probably didn't do much out there, so should they get a 1 rating? or is 5-6 a good "standard" score? What do you guys think? Give us your input in the comments section or in the forums and maybe we can all come together over time and produce some type of standard rating scale.

Also, thanks so much to everyone who's contributed their match ratings to the data base. The more people who supply ratings the cooler the stats will be, you know, the more the better basically. So, feel free to give your opinion of how each Timber played and rate the player here. Okay, on to the ratings....

- Starters -

Mandjou Keita
Keita had a decent performance in his first game back. I thought he created a lot of opportunities with his patience and vision. Great example in the 27th minute, deep in the box in a position where many players would rush to blast a shot, Keita calmly stalled the ball for a quick moment, then looked around, then sent a pass back to the top of the box to Josten who missed a one-timer off the woodwork. Also, had a couple shots of his own hit the crossbar. Glad he's back.
Dropping Timber Rating - 7

"Keita was terrible, in my opinion. He had good looks and didn't convert any of them. He is not at all dynamic, especially in a slower, half-field set. Again, where is OJ?" - Maofootball

"Lots of woodwork last night. Just needs that first goal (and a competent midfield) to get back in his comfort zone." - Greener99
Community Rating - 6.1

Steve Cronin
had 10 shots fired at him and was forced to make 5 saves, including a couple that required some effort. Can't blame him too much for the goal, certainly a lot of the blame has to fall on the relaxed play by the backline. If we could have gotten a goal or two things would be much different.
Dropping Timber Rating - 7

"No glaring holes, though he was not very good on goal kicks again. Why does he kick it straight out of bounds?" - Maofootball
Community Rating - 6.59

Ryan Pore

He didn't score, but didn't play a horrible game. Didn't see to really be involved, not sure it was his fault though. Didn't excel in set piece chances, seems to really like sending the ball directly at the wall during free kicks too.
Dropping Timber Rating - 6.5

"What the hell is wrong with Pore? No goals yesterday, kick him off the team." - The Shoe
Community Rating - 5.73

Ian Joy
Steady play and it's starting to become expected. Didn't make any glaring mistakes that I can recall and also did a nice job with his passes, especially long balls. His reliability and quite confidence are big reasons why he's wearing that band on his arm.
Dropping Timber Rating - 6.5

"Played typically well on defense as well as involved in offense down the flank" - Shrek
Community Rating - 6.55

Stephen Keel
Had a couple big break ups, didn't have an especially great game, but no big errors. Just the typical stuff from Keel, locking up the middle well.
Dropping Timber Rating - 6.5

"Held up the center well w/o Danso" - Greener99
Community Rating - 6.68

George Josten
Lead the team in shots with 6. On one hand he's active and finds opportunities to score, on the other hand its starting to get harder to excuse all the open net misses. Seems to get a bit too excited. Perhaps tough luck, but when it starts to occur often it begins to be more of a characteristic.
Dropping Timber Rating - 6.5

"Holds up the ball well, but this kid needs to practice finishing. Another clear whiff in front of goal." - Greener99

"Josten cannot score for some reason. He's been given tons of good chances and he's blown them all. Where is OJ?" - Maofootball
Community Rating - 5.6

Steve Purdy
Purdy had a few blunders last night allowing guys to slip behind him on a handful of occasions and of course gave Baltimore the free corner with an inexplicable kick out of bounds. He's had his moments this season and has shown solid passing ability, but communication might still be an issue.
Dropping Timber Rating - 6

"A few blunders, but a few really strong plays. I like Purdy a lot, but last night was not his best." - Maofootball
Community Rating - 5.54

Johan Claesson
Didn't think he did much last night, which is a damning statement in a sense. Claesson needs to step up his play, he's not being aggressive or creative, and is certainly not playing up to his potential right now.
Dropping Timber Rating - 5.5

"You can do better." - The Shoe
Community Rating - 4.72

Quavas Kirk
A lackadaisical performance, but he did initiate a couple runs on offense, just wish he'd do it more. I like his versatility, but needs to be more consistent and aggressive.
Dropping Timber Rating - 5.5

"I believe the Quavas Kirk experiment is (should be) at an end. Cannot keep possesion of the ball or pass effectively." - Greener99
Community Rating - 4.18

James Marcelin
Been inconsistent all season. Sometimes I see flashes that justify his hype, but most of the time I see a player that has been turning the ball over, not creating opportunities, and still searching for his rhythm. Without a doubt he's been better on the defensive side.
Dropping Timber Rating - 5

"He slowed the attack down. Our attack. That's not good. He also looked indecisive when he had possession" - Shrek
Community Rating - 4.5

Brian Farber
Didn't think he played bad, but never really got started since he only stayed in the match for 23 minutes. However, does have a tendency to rush things and try to force the action a bit much.
Dropping Timber Rating - 5

"I didn't think Farber was doing anything wrong before he came out for Nimo. Admittedly, Nimo was much better last night, but only 25 minutes for a starter? That was weird." - Maofootball
Community Rating - 5.28

- Subs -

Alex Nimo
A good chunk of playing time for Nimo. Sometimes I feel there are a lot of expectation on Nimo to come in and make plays right away, he's seen as the "energy off the bench". But last night he brought it, had some creative passes and got involved in the attacks. Dragging the Baltimore player off the field will go down as one of my all-time favorite Timber moments as well.
Dropping Timber Rating - 7

"Some good some bad." - Scott M

"Best player on the field for Portland last night. By a mile." - Maofootball
Community Rating - 6.86

Tony McManus
Was a ball of energy as soon as he entered into the match and didn't stop until the final whistle. Had a few nice runs up the sideline and really made his presence felt last night. He's a great option to have coming off the bench.
Dropping Timber Rating - 6.5

"Slowed down the offense. Their offense. Was a great substitution." - Shrek
Community Rating - 6.4

Scot Thompson
Probably should be starting, although I can understand trying to develop the new talent. Still, always brings a calming veteran influence and strong, steady defensive play, his throw-ins are a nice added bonus as well.
Dropping Timber Rating - 6.5

"Another impressive outing, offensive minded. 2nd best fullback on the squad, without a doubt." - Greener99
Community Rating - 6.91

Takayuki Suzuki
Not his best game. Really rushed things out there and never created any serious threats, including pulling the early trigger on a shot from the top of the box, when there were many more options at his disposable, mainly taking the ball deeper inside to put pressure on the defense.
Dropping Timber Rating - 5.5

"Shots weren't a real threat" - Scott M
Community Rating - 6.01

Doug DeMartin
Only played 7 minutes, but regardless was able to quickly interject himself into the offense, make some plays, and even took a shot on goal. The kid's not bad.
Dropping Timber Rating - 5.5

"Brought energy as he was supposed to" - Shrek
Community Rating - 5.64
