Football in modern times has not been so friendly with Chile. The Roberto Rojas scandal in a 1989 World Cup qualifying match saw Chile be disqualified from the 90 and 94 World Cups. The incident started when a Brazilian fan threw a firework unto the pitch near goalkeeper Rojas, who then fell to the ground. Rojas's forehead was bleeding, and he claimed he had been struck by the firework. A review of the video tape clearly showed that the firework never did strike Rojas, and an investigation found that Rojas had used a razor blade hidden in his glove to self inflict the wound. Rojas was banned from football by Fifa, and loved by backyard wrestlers around the world.
This will be Chile's first WC since France 98, in which they finished in the top 16. They were drawn in Group H with Spain, Switzerland and Honduras.
¡Vamos Chile!
